Hydrolocked.

Agreed, someone might post up a truck they picked up to part out. Just throw up a WTB in that section. Also I would looking in TW also. A 3.4 is a 3.4 no matter what it came out of. My .02 man. Sorry about this.

Sounds like a pretty miserable run of luck. Hate to hear it man.

About the engine... Check copart.com. If you are into changing things up, swap in a 4.7l V8. Search for singtoe's writeup thread. If my 3.4l ever craps out that is what I will do. Just a fun thought.

I think im just terribly unlucky, the puddle was small, walked through it afterwords and only came 1/2 way up my shins. pulled all the plugs and spun motor, made a loud clunk and nothing more. I had it towed to the house and will try to pull the heads this weekend and look for valve damage. May part out, may sell to salvage yard, buddy of mine is a buyer for LKQ and offered 2k as it sits so we shall see. My wife is more PO'd than I am. I just went in to pull a buddy's s10 out (he got stuck) pulled him out just fine then this happened. :(

Oh, and the truck is BONE stock. even had OE plugs still in it, air filter was soaked and weight about 10lbs seemingly.

Have you tried towing it to a local engine shop? Not trying to insult your mechanical skills here but to me your story doesn't make sense. We have all driven through lots of puddles and it is very very difficult (to me unheard of) for someone to hydrolock their truck from a 1ft puddle.

It seems quite possible to me that you are not mechanically inclined enough to diagnose the problem, meaning maybe you don't need a new engine ....

I think you should let a professional look at it.

I think you are highly underestimating my mechanical capabilities. The engine is coming out next weekend. I'll disassemble and asses damage, but my money is on bent/broken rod.

Any chance the previous owner did the deckplate mod and that hole was left open? I don't see how (either) with the stock air intake it could have sucked up that much water.

Well I don't really know your mechanical abilities - I meant no offense of course :)

I just wanted to suggest that a simple $75 second opinion from a Professional Certified Toyota mechanic might be a good idea before pulling apart the engine or buying a new-to-you used engine.

A lot of misdiagnosis on this forum and all I see for your problem description is "hydrolocked". You did not post any dash pics, description of what the symptoms are etc. Nothing. So it isn't that I think you specifically are wrong about your engine, just that what you have posted so far doesn't justify the plan.

So for the sake of keeping this thread entertaining can you explain in detail what symptoms your truck has? Also would water in the intake likely cause (as you believe) an immediate bent rod?

I have to agree with Brian here. The wet air filter obviously is a good indicator that something is wrong but through only 1 ft of water at 25 MPH I can't see it really even getting wet. And to hydrolock I'd think you'd be a sitting duck in that water, not after you made it through.

Did anything else happen the same day maybe? Any other water crossings? I've seen quite a few examples of these things taking in large amounts of muddy water and coming through unscathed.

Did you pull the dip stick? What does the oil look like? What did the cylinders look like when you pulled the plugs out?

Regardless of what happened, it sucks to hear about it.

Yeah. If I didn't hydrolock mine after this, then there's no way you hydrolocked yours.

I've had mine in sh¡t just as deep, got the filter soaked, and STILL haven't hydrolocked it, as recently as last weekend.

There's a reason you're not giving us the whole story. What is it?

Believe me, no one is more perplexed than me, and for what its worth, im not looking for e-sympathy. The resonator box in the intake was completely full of water. The engine is coming out this coming weekend and disassembly will begin once its out. Also, I had my brother (a Toyota master tech @ my local dealer) with me, when it happened, we are all like WTF? Anyways, we will see this weekend. I did pick up a good used engine just in case from a friend, so we will see.

So it seems quite possible that it isn't hydro locked at all.

So does it even turn over? Have you replaced the starter, confirmed it is working? They often go out after getting wet.

Yes, the starter works, no the motor doesn't move more than a small bump then a loud metallic crunch/clank noise.

Had those same symptoms happen to be. Turned out there was a broken shaft or something. The first time it made that sound was right after I had Seafoam'd through a vacuum hose. I killed the motor. When I went to restart, the starter made that awful noise. I thought for sure I had hydrolocked it.

Although I did not have an air box fill of water as you describe. Something is wrong with your intake if that happened. Maybe somebody decided to use your air box as a rain gauge?

drain the oil... if you hydrolocked their would be water in the oil buy now, as it would have drained out of the cylinders. and if you had water in the ISR, then you went through deeper water than your letting on. you can all so put a socket (27mm i think) on the end of the crank pulley and turn the motor over by hand... -id pull the plugs before doing this just so you know the compression isnt holding you back.

Pull the spark plug out and turn the engine. If it is hydro-locked it should spray water out from the spark plug hole when cranking. If not then you might have just broke some internal moving parts.

Definetely pull the plugs and crank the engine. Water will spray out of the holes like said above. I hyrdo'd a 22re back in the day,and had to do this. Threw a rod through the block 2 weeks later, not to deter you or anything.

What a bunch of bad luck. I wonder if there were previous issues with the motor already? How many miles on the 4runner? no one ever asked.

I don't doubt your mechanic skills considering you are a mod on the supra forums and seem like a typical toyota fan who has turned a wrench or two. This is just a very curious event.

Ive ran through 2 feet of what with a cone filter on a 3vz 3.slow and I didn't have any problems either? And don't post that you are disappointed with your truck because you are offending all the fan boys on here.
