This is when you can't move it due to MECHANICAL reasons.

If the cause is electronic, this button won't do anything.

Not even Toyota makes a line of perfect 100% defective free vehicle. Once in a great while a lemon sneaks out. However, Toyota's record of very low problem is legendary, and that this is quite a shock reflects the vast majority of Toyotas that are nearly faultless. Just compare Toys to GM, Dodge, Ford, and these problems are so common it's expected. Just go to dieselstop.com and see how complacent Ford diesel owners are about complete disasters in their trucks. They just tell people to suck it in and lump it.

So the real issue now is how quickly wil Toyota fix it and make it right for you. Best to you.
 
almost all vehicles today are controlled by a computer, to make it safer to the "average" driver. I dont know what to tell you except I hope it leads to an 06 for you, I like those head lights. but really, this is the first I have heard of a 4runner just crapping out like that but wow, atleast you are okay and no one rear ended you on a busy road like that. i feel you on steam blowing through your ears! good luck and keep us updated, just goes to show you that these things can be completly random sometimes. It worked for me and mine was electrical. I had a short somewhere that kept blowing fuses and had to carry a screwdriver with me for 2 weeks so I could push the release button. It was a real pain!
 
Sorry to hear about the new Limited. If you didn't have shit for luck, you wouldn't have any! I'll bet the remote start is the problem.

Thanks for the concern everybody. I thought I would have a more definitive answer today but here is where I stand. My service writer wants the head mechanic to work on my truck and he had a lot of cars scheduled today. She brought him out just to see what is going on and he felt it was a blown fuse. The writer told me that if it is a fuse, they will not release the truck to me until they find out why a fuse went on such a new vehicle. Basically, they will start getting down to business with my truck tomorrow. They also have the guy who installed the remote starter coming in to look at it because the tech had a feeling that may have caused it. The members who thought that was the problem, good thinking! :p I was also told that they never saw such a messed up vehicle!

BTW, where did you get the remote starter installed?. I did the same with my ES300 in 2000 @ circuitcity and didn't have any problem yet.........

It was all done through the dealer. I guess they have a guy who comes down and installs alarms and remote starters. When they told me about a remote starter, I made sure to ask more than once if I run a risk of messing up the truck.

I was shock by reading Mark's post. Glad that he and his brother are OK. Hope the dealer will return a safe truck back to you soon.

By looking at the first picture without reading the post, I would assume someone drving a 4Runner got caught by COP with unknown reason. :bash:

The cause of the problem was the remote starter. They started working on the truck 7:00 this morning and found that the guy hooked up the remote starter too close to the parking brake. Everytime I set the parking brake, the wires would get closer and closer. I guess when I stopped at the light, maybe there was a bump that caused the wire to rub and disconnect, which blew a fuse. This problem is not Toyota's fault, which in a way makes me feel a little better. Now if I see that guy who hooked up the remote starter..... :bash:

I should have the truck back this evening. Hopefully, I will be able to bring it home on its own 4 wheels! :p
 
I'm glad they figured it out so quickly. It sounds like the dealer you go to has some pretty good techs (other than the jacknut who installed the remote start)

I think this is the reason because I have a "Turbo Timer" that leaves the engine running for one extra minute after I switch the ignition off to cool off the turbocharger, and it leaves all those warning lights on while it's working.

For some weird reason, when you only interrupt one of the ignition wires, all these warning lights go on.

Did you install a remote starter, car alarm, or did you mess with the underdash wires in any way?

Glad it worked out for you Mark. The minute I started reading the thread and saw you had a remote starter added I knew that was the problem.

Glad to hear your truck is going to be back in your good graces. You may want to appologize to it for those really bad thoughts you were having on the side of the road.:D
 
My 4Runner is sitting in my garage right now! Basically, the remote starter was hooked up too close to an E-brake wire. Since I always set my E-brake, that was moving them closer and closer together. When I stopped at the light, it must have given the wires a jolt that made them make contact. That caused a fuse to blow, which was repsonisible for disabling everything. They replaced a "purple wire E-brake" and the fuse that was blown. In addition, they re-wired the remote starter so it doesn't make contact with anything!

You are right. I think I will give it a nice wash and wax for what I said! :) I wasn't in a very good mood being stuck in the middle of a major highway! It never even entered my mind that the remote starter caused this until I read the posts of a few members here. I thought the worst! The lesson I learned from this is to always carry a screwdriver in the center consol! That would have at least allowed me to push it out of danger.
 
So when they pulled the truck onto the flatbed, did they push the release button down on the shifter console first or did they release it some other way?

Sorry if I missed this somewhere else in the thread.

Bad luck you had this experience but at the moment it sounds like no major damage.
