I blew my Ring gear

Got the third yesterday (Thanks Singtoe), installed my lock-right in it last night. Installed it in the truck this morning, and already took it for a test drive. Everything works perfect and there is no noises! Thanks for the help guys.

on a side note.. Singtoe... Wrap that thing better before filing the box with foam.. I had a ton of white flakes inside the diff and had to pick them all out while it was apart. Clever Diaper packaging, works perfect! I guess Huggies is more absorbent after all!

I am glad everything worked out for you. Now you can save the old carrier and get some higher ratio ring and pinion for it. Take your time , shop parts and maybe find a good shop to do the install.

Sorry bud, I thought i wrapped it enough to keep it protected. Did the box hold it shape well? I know that, i got a diff in from KY and by the time it got to my house, it had nearly fallen out of the box.

Gee - Did you clean the rear axle housing out really well from the last time the ring gear blew up? It looks like some debris might have been left behind and the oil finally pick it up and moved it into the path of the ring and pinion mesh.

you know.. I didn't think of that. I bet that is what happened. It's damn near impossible to clean those things 100%.. I pick all the pieces I could feel with my hand out, and used a rag to catch the little stuff but maybe some got left behind? that would explain the Explosion as the nose of the truck went up.. must have moved debris high in the axle housing maybe?

I wasn't running it too hard when it happened but I was climbing. During the field swap, I used the magnet on the drain plug to pick up all the junk. for future reference.. and additional tips?

Geez, twice. You should just take the whole housing off, and wash that thing out with a pressure washer (or one of those self car washes) to make sure you get everything out of there.

damn, that sucks... I just sold my spare rear 3rd with 4.10s like 2 weeks ago, too! Next time pressure wash that SOB!! Hope you find another one lol.

When i cut my axle housing to install the e-locker, there was a ton of debris (from grinding, drilling and tapping) behind splash shield in the axle housing. Water and soap cleaned it right up. Ran some brake cleaner through it and dried it out.

Good thing you didn't pay a crap load for that diff...

I just use a magnet to get the old chunks out, the ring and pinion will usually eat up the smaller pieces...bearings don't appreciate it though.

that seems like an expensive way to do it, and won't do as good a job as actually cleaning it. Removal of the axle housing isn't that bad; at the risk of another diff, I'd say it's worth it.

If it is localized, I'd feel fine about that kind of thing, but it sounds like there are likely particles everywhere, all the length of the axle tubes, etc.

Yeah, did that.. I think I need to go the extra step.

no ****, just pull the axles and run the hose? really? I can do that, but how do I ensure I get all the water out afterwards? I am guess you let yours sit for a while?

Housing is magnetic but you just keep the magnet off the housing a bit it will grab the chunks you just need a strong enough magnet.

well, hmm.. guess I will pull the 3rd, and axles and clean it out good with brake/carb cleaner. that will make me feel better than water.

It's cool, looks like I am not so lucky this time but at least I didn't spend an arm and leg on the last diff. Thanks! I will NOT be wheeling it for a while, going to have to save money.. going to re-gear at the same time.

Great Find! I appreciate the offer very much, I am going to email the guy and find out if the truck it came out of was a V6 or not. "8" 3rd is probably the 2 pinion 4cyl model which is what I have in the back now. My Locker is not compatible.
