I broke my Oil dipstick tube!!!

Well, I Just finished putting a rough country lift kit on my dads old 96 4runner and changed the oil. went to pull the dip stick out and it would'nt budge so i pulled harder and i think I broke the whole assembly because I could see oil leaking out down below. I never heard of such a thing. Am I screwed?? Where do I start?? Thanks

Did you actually get down and look to see where the leak is coming from? The tube separates midway down. Other than that if it's leaking it will be where it enters the pan.

You start by getting down n dirty and actually visually verifying where your leak is coming from. Then, you order the replacement part. If you need help finding the part, take a picture of it and post your findings back here, and I'm sure one of us will be able to find the part number. But it starts with you, we can't look at the truck for you!

I'm only 17 and I don't know much about cars yet. This is our summer project. BTW is there a way to replace the whole tube if I need to? Thanks!

Yes absolutely. The tube simply fits into the pan tube with an o-ring, and it is bolted once up along the way.

As for the tube, I don't recall if it is welded in or if it is removable. When i pulled my pan, I took some pics but I wasn't focusing on the tube itself, so it's hard to see how it is attached.

Here's the pics though. You can see the tube in the upper right and you can see the hole in the upper right portion of the pan.

I hadn't cleaned the pan yet so it's hard to see through the oil, but this is the closest pic I have.

Are we talking "Engine Oil Pan" or "Transmission Oil Pan"? The pictures you posted Woody look like the Trans Pan.

I've heard if you tug on their dipsticks they get all leaky too — but I can't confirm this...

BTW I looked up the PNs and thanks again. I did notice the tube is broken at some kind of junction? I can see the dip stick still going into it. You mentioned it was a two section tube. Maybe I'm looking at the top of the oil pan and don't recognize it. I'll have to wait till morning to get into it. At least now I know who won the tug-o-war I had with that thing. Full Retard.

Chances are you just pulled the tube out of the pan. It would be almost impossible to put enough pulling force on the dipstick to break the surrounding tube unless it was already damaged. Also keep in mind the tube is two-piece and separates about halfway from the pan to the top.

It is 2 piece? I know it bolts to one of the WP studs. When I took mine out of my 2000 when I did my TB/WP it came out as one piece. But that thing was so rusty it could have been rusted together and I wouldn't have noticed.
