I did the nasty to my drivetrain...

Have you ever been a new wheeler, air your new all terrains back up after messing around in the mud, then take off in the highway and realize you're still in 4lo when you're redlining at 40mph?

Well, I have. When I noticed I tried to go down to neutral and slow down. Tried. I overshot neutral and shifted into reverse in 4lo at 40mph :toilet:. Ka clunk ka clunk ka clunk.

Now my drivetrain is none too happy with me. Drives fine in 2wd and will engage 4wd and the locker, but every 5 feet or so in 4wd I get a good clunk and a shimmy out of her. Can't tell if the clunk is coming from the diff or the transfer case. My best guess for these symptoms is that I sheared something in the front diff and it's floating around in there and getting jammed, causing my clunks. What do you all think? Am I hosed or is this a simple repair?

I'm sure you know now to simply slow down next time. But hey, I didn't know it'd go that fast in 4LO, probably a very good 0-40mph time!!!

But anyway, I'd say get it on a lift and engage 4wd while someone listens below to try to narrow down the noisy culprit then start opening that up to see what ya' got. Luck. :cowboy:

I would have thought these vehicles were modern enough to prevent a shift into reverse at such a high speed. Interesting.

I once shifted into reverse in a Chevy van doing 50 km/hr forward. Didn't seem to cause harm.

I'm wondering if the rear axle was smart enough not to engage, but the front not so much.

Based on the symptoms you described, my money is on the t/case. The chain driven transfer case would be the weakest link. It would go far before a diff would grenade IMO.

Im sorry, can you repeat that. You shifted into reverse at 40mph?

My runners a 5spd so I am not positive about this.

I thought you could just slap an auto into neutral, but you actually have to press the button to get beyond neutral and into reverse? Is this how the 4runner auto works?

Only because you asked...NO...and I don't even know how that would be possible....and not know you were in 4LO. The super hard/fast shifts, the vehicle vibration from motor, slow speed compared to time/distance travelled, the tachometer, would have let me know something was not right.

How could you not feel all of that torque in 4lo? LMAO!
And why did you shift into neutral? Why not take your foot off the gas & brake lightly? Not that you would need to brake because you would slow down so quickly? I'm getting whiplash just thinking about it...:guitar3:

I agree. You can really feel 4lo in our trucks.

Side note one of my dumb moments was pretty bad. When first met my wife 12 years ago I took her ford expedition offloading. Bragging I showed her how to use 4lo and how to off-road up the pass late night to stay in the truck. Might have gotten a little impaired but that's beside the point. Haha. I drove it next morning back to my car and i was out.

Week later she calls me and says her truck is acting strange can I look at it. Jump in her truck and immediately see 4lo is active. I'm like OMG. She worked 50 miles away from her house all highway. You could not even tell it was in 4lo when driving. It ended up getting trans and x-case replaced. Oops.

Let's be honest here - were you DRUNK??!!!

Seriously - how could anyone reasonably sober do ANY of this and think it is OK?!?!

LOL <----- we are all thinking it, just not saying it. ;):

Honestly, I feel bad for OP. I hope it's not as horrible as it sounds.

OP, please excuse the members here. You basically walked into a thread saying you changed your oil but forgot to put the drain plug back on and now you have a red light on the dash & the truck sounds a bit funny.

Hey bud, if it makes you feel any better... a long while back I was driving my old 4Runner offroad in 4LO and got going too fast down a hill in 2nd gear. I shifted fast into 1st but in the time it took me to shift I sped up more.... hit about 8k for a second and blew the headgasket instantly.

Wow.

Breaks didnt help? I'm guessing no brakes on a downhill so you have to limit it by gear speed.

Haha, we have the same truck, live & learn. Dont depress the clutch! Brake lightly.

You're supposed to hit the brakes! LOL If you slam it into 1st from second going downhill you can slide & loose control on loose gravel or dirt.

This is off topic, but has anyone else here ever been coming to a stop light going down a hill and thought of what you would do if your brakes gave out? I don't know why, but I always think of this when a light turns red and I have to hit the brakes fast. I'm thinking, ok, 2nd and low gear are back. So if my brakes go out I'm going to grab the lever and yank it back asap! Anyways . . .

Pull on the emergency brake.

Nah, youre just going to grit your teeth and smash. Or maybe grab the emergency brake.
