I did the nasty to my drivetrain...

Turns out it was the front diff. Didn't pay to have it disassembled but their stethoscopes found a ton of shrapnel/shavings floating around in there. TCase checked out fine.

So...anyone have a good 98 Ltd diff (4.30 gears) for sale, or have recommendations on where I should be looking for one?

Oh wow! Ive gotta say that I'm impressed by these transfer cases! Perhaps Ive spent too much time around some sh1tty Italian Iveco T/cases that grenade at the first whiff of torque.

Picked up a front diff assembly from a rollover for $150. The swap took ~4 hours, most of the time was spent wiggling it out as it's wedged in pretty tight between the cross member and oil pan. Only special tool I needed was a 12mm hex. Now I'm back in action and no worse for wear!

Eh... If its a downslope, you can use L or 2 in 2WD and riding the brake, if a deep upwards climb i can see the need for 4L on top of that.

Although i have been offroad in the snow before with drops on both sides. Was in 4L and L and praying for life going downhill lol.

I'm talking 12000ft trails coming down. 2wd in 1st won't do anything. The descents are so steep and long I give my trans/tcase rests as I go down.

Last trip down Pikes Peak I got stuck behind a diesel with hill decent. In 2wd L I still had to ride brakes. Get to bottom and they measure brake temps. They let him go and made me stay to cool brakes. They were starting to fade. Was scary.

Do you think 4L would help in your situation?

oh I didn't know 4L needs wet pavement too, i thought only 4H. Makes sense I suppose.

Yes it really needs wet pavement. Your truck will bind and start to buck a more in L than Hi. It works the same way, just a lower gearing for more tq at said rpm to help you climb.

Everyone does dumb shit. If not this then it's stopping on railroad tracks then a train comes by, or driving into a parking garage with the roof rack loaded high; thankfully not me but my friends. Now you, just like them, will have a good story to tell over beers.
