I don't have access to another 22RE to compare

Hi folks.

I have just taken off the head of my 22RE to replace the timing set, and everything I had a chance during that. All the seals that came with the head gasket kit, head bolts and stuff.

Upon assembly, I got wondering about two things, and as it says on the title, I don't have access to another 22RE engine to compare, these are rare engines over here...

First is the head valves sound at idle. They have a distinct sound at idle, even though they are adjusted to spec. I am tending to believe it is really like that, as my Samurai engine also does a distinct tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic-tic noise, but it is much quieter on the Suzuki.

This is how it sounds today.

Second, is where the in-dash oil pressure gauge stands or what it reads at idle. Warm engine, idling at 750 RPM, it stands about half of the first quarter mark (the marks are not linear). It reaches the first quarter mark at about 1400 RPM.

Is this 22RE behaving like its brothers over there?

My '87 22re sounds like that and the oil pressure gauge reads the same as yours, when driving on the road the needle goes up to half mark.

The 22re is inherently a noisy motor, but yours doesn't sound right to me. You set them to 8 and 12 with the motor hot, right?

You oil pressure sounds normal.

Thanks Kid for the reply.
0.008 and 0.012i (0.20 and 0.30 mm) with the engine COLD.

The manual is weird when it comes to this...

EG1–15 CYLINDER HEAD COMPONENTS FOR REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION says:

Adjust the clearance of half of the valves.
Adjust only the valves indicated by arrows as shown.

Valve clearance (Cold):
Intake
0.20 mm (0.00s in.)
Exhaust
0.30 mm (0.012 in.)

HINT: After installing the cylinder head, warm up the engine and adjust the valve clearance.

MA–14 Hot Engine Operations instructions from valve clearance adjustment is only based on warmed up engine.

So, hot or cold?

Regards,
Gustavo.

Hot. It's really a PITA because the motor cools down before you can set them all, but if you do half and then put it together and warm it up again and do the other half you can get close.
