I have it on mine and dig it but once it starts having issues, seems cost-prohibitive to fix. Good to know there are options but removal sounds like not a lot of fun.

It is big money for the stealer to replace, but I've seen new OEM (4) shocks go for $350. A steal if you ask me. All I would have to do is locate the lines and the 2 other "reserve tanks" to completely replace the system. Oh, and Toyota instructions on how to properly do it. So far, mine are fine, but they WILL fail. I haven't seen any shock that will do what XREAS does. I had billies once, but were too stiff. I've heard OEM plain-jane shocks are ok, but it is difficult to find out who has them b/c most here mod their rigs for offroad.
In short, I do plan on replacing the XREAS all together with a new XREAS as long as it's not expensive, with a mechanic friend. I'll make a thread of it, but I'm pretty sure it won't be popular.

It's cool to see my old thread come back to life! Now it's been over 4 years! and all is still good. The only suspension issue I have had to deal with, all this time, is new front lower control arms. The bushings wore out. I plan on replacing the bushings on my original control arms, with OEM bushings, for the replacement next time. My rig currently has 177K miles and doing great!

I really do think XREAS is a kick ass and clever as hell system. But 2K for Toyota or 8-900 for new shocks alone without any hydraulic fluid being returned to the system if they were leaky (like) mine means almost anything is a better option.
I am putting some rough riding Bilsteins on mine next week. I may regret it, but I'm going all in to have a rig that can take anything I might need it to do. If the on road ride suffers... Oh well.

so on this setup, you are still on the xreas springs?
i thought the springs are on the soft side, with everything apart, new springs are just a little more right?

I don't know if you're talking to me, but if so, no. I'll have 6112's and 5160's w/ swayaway 1.5" rear springs.

not you, but to the op. dont think he specify if he is on stock xreas springs or aftermarket.

If it wasn't so costly, I'd consider it. I really have been impressed with how well the XREAS controls body lean in hard corners.
But for the cost it just doesn't make sense. I'll got with Bilsteins and new FJC springs when I redo mine.

I used the stock springs front and rear.
Did fantastic.
Later, (the alignment shop photo), I added the rear lift springs from All-Pro, and swapped out the front springs with Tacoma TRD springs I picked up locally on Craigslist for $25 for the pair (score!)

I haven't had the opportunity to drive a non-XREAS 4Runner to compare it to mine. My first car was a 1984 Cadillac Brougham. That thing was FLOATY. My 4R isn't , but it isn't "sports car stiff" either. I'm old, I want a comfortable ride (nonfloat), but stiff in the corners, LOL.

Swap out for the Bilsten's and you won't regret it. The big difference I noticed was the nose dive under heavy braking has been reduced significantly.
As for ride quality it is much better in my opinion as the truck no longer feels floaty in the highway. Also when I added the 275's the truck feels much more planted and the good news is that the rear wheels no longer lock up when you panic brake.
Hi Staceman, I live in Phoenix area as well (Chandler to be exact) and recently want to have struts replaced and found out that my car has X-Reas system! I have done some research and read your posts, however I am not sure if I understood them correctly since I have little experience fixing cars.
I have a 2008 4runner V6 4wd limited, with X-Reas.
Here is what I am going to do:
1. remove old struts and X-Reas system.
2. replace with KYB pre assembled front struts (SR4130, SR4131) and rear shocks (341340,344410).
Can I do this? Thank you.
