NateMob Toyotacolin white toy taco , myself and a few other guys from the TW forum went for a run on MLK day. We hit an area that I've been through before and finished the day at a spot that was completely new for most of us.

It was a pretty diverse group of Yotas airing down at the trailhead...

All of the Toyotas walked this spot pretty easily, but the Jeep got crossed up and had to give it a couple tries.

We worked our way to the top of the original path up a large rock escarpment called La Bajada Hill. This was part of the original Rt. 66 during the early 1900's but has been abandoned and is no longer maintained. After some flooding rains last summer, it has a few spots that are barely passable.

After that we continued on over the Caja Del Rio plateau. I got turned around and made a wrong turn at one point, which burned about 20 minutes by the time I figured out where we were and got us back on track. Our next stop was a big sinkhole.

Nathan, thinking about taking a dive into the sinkhole...

Good thing he chose not to jump, it was a long way down...

Colin, coming down the steep north side of the peak where the sinkhole resides... but what's that white stuff?

The group having lunch at the entrance to Tank Trap...

Tank trap is a trail that follows the bottom of a rocky wash that pours into White Rock canyon. There are several erosion control dams that are basically impassable near the bottom (unless you're in a buggy), so we dropped in below the uppermost dam. The line around the dam involves traversing a steep off camber section of big rock ledges. At the bottom is a 3-4 foot deep pond.

NateMob and myself were the only ones willing to give it a shot.

This shot is NateMob trying a STEEP alternate line up the first obstacle on Tank Trap. He ended up getting stuck on two ledges that blocked the P/S front and D/S rear at the same time. Plus there was a huge point of rock under the rear axle/gas tank that kept pounding his rig.

Note, the surface of the iced pond under his P/S rear tire. Also, where's the front bumper!? Something new is coming soon, I think.

And another shot, by Toyotacolin...

I took the standard off camber line, and with some excellent spotting I made it to the top.

Coming back down was SKEEEEEEEETCHY!!!! One of the guys had run it before in a Jeep. He warned that coming down the obstacle would be worse than going up and he was right. I tried several lines and kept having to back up and try again. Eventually, I got to the point where the truck was at 35+ degrees on the inclinometer, with the P/S rear wheel off the ground. It wasn't looking good and I was very close to flopping my rig.

Photo by Toyotacolin, as usual it does not do justice to the situation, but notice the P/S rear tire just hanging there. The line that NateMob took is right below my D/S rear tire.

Finally, the anxiety got to me and I decided to turn hard driver and just gun the throttle. "When it doubt, throttle out!" I was banking on the centrifugal force pushing the P/S rear back down and allowing me to get past the obstacle and stabilized.

Just after I got the truck stable and stopped...

Thankfully it did work, but this was me:

Finally off the obstacle while the group talked about how close I was to tipping..

Headed out at the end of the day...

It was an awesome run, and I really enjoyed catching up with some people as well as meeting Nathan and Colin. Tank Trap is the hairiest obstacle I've ever been on and it gave me some good off camber experience. The weather was gorgeous and most of us were in t-shirts by the end of the day. We all got to see some new things and places while exploring the plateau, which was cool because it created a new experience for the whole group.

We finished out the day with some microbrews and Chicken & Waffles at a local brewery. I know Nate got a picture of the dinner, it was good stuff.

Thanks to Toyotacolin for the excellent pictures of Nathan and I on Tank Trap, and throughout the day. He has a few more that I'm hoping he'll post soon.

Oh yeah, we also took a skiing trip to Wolf Creek, CO in the '01. It was the first time my Wife and I have been away for a weekend without our Daughter in over a year. It was nice! :naughty:

In the parking lot at the lodge....

And on the mountain... if you can't read the sign it says "Waterfall Gate 3". That section is all double black diamond runs. I'm always thankful that my Wife has the skill to bomb runs like that right next to me.

Last but not least, this is almost done... I could have used it on the MLK day run.

Looks like good times! That sink-hole looks deadly! Awesome pictures...

It was definitely a cool day. Thanks for checking out the post.

Here is one more.. and I'm posting more on TW for you.

Thanks Colin! You've got some skills behind the wheel as well as the lens! I really appreciate you posting those shots.

Great pics man! Still some cool things to see in this build thread! :)

Still? Like what, I'd start posting pictures of cakes and toenails and shower curtains? J/k man, thanks! At this point my build is almost complete, and now it's time to use it, so expect more action shots.

Is that Tank Trap by Santa Fe? If so I have been on it.

Yup. It's a fun one isn't it?

Glad to hear you didn't flop. Gassing out has saved me many times.

Thanks AM, that makes two of us. I was reluctant to punch it in this case because too much speed coming down could have been equally dangerous, but I had to make the call.

:thanks: to Toyotacolin once again for the pictures below. These are a few of the ones he posted in the TW thread, but I wanted to put them here because they better illustrate the line/terrain.

This last one was taken above the off camber section on the way up, where you have to climb a deep notch. I got some good front stuff right here.

What a great time we had! From meeting everyone in the morning to BSing with everyone at Nexus over Chicken n' Waffles. MLK Jr. Day baby! Can't wait to get back up there in the parts of NM im not as familiar with.

Man looks like so much fun! Can't wait till I can get some real leave and actually do some wheeling. Sketchy pics by the way man, dang.

Yeah I want to do some more wheeling up there too, maybe a trip around the chama train??? When I went up there and rode the train I saw what looked like some cool trails, idk about rock crawling, but just some cool trails. Now that I found out my FJ gets 20+mpg even after the mods I'm much more excited to take it out on these longer trips.

Very nice pics Nick. Can't wait to see the gas tank skid bolted in place.

Thanks, Drew! The gas tank skid is hanging under the truck as we speak, supported by it's own mounting brackets. I need to finish up the rear mounting points and weld all the seams, plus paint, then it's done. Getting the mounts right on this piece has been more challenging than the other two skids.

Its amazing how something can look so easy but be so hard.

It didn't look easy to me, so  Maybe you had to be there? I'm sure parking with one tire on big rock next to a maintained dirt road would look much harder.

So Moab this year???

Not sure yet. I'm considering a trip in March that a couple of the guys on here are putting together. As far as the TW meet, I didn't like how last years event played out as far as organization and follow through. I was on my own most of the time and that's not how I like to roll in a place as risky as Moab. If it looks like there's a group that I might be able to wheel with, I guess we'll see.

I'm glad you guys enjoyed yourselves. I felt a little pressure to put on a good show, and although we didn't get to hit everything on the list, we can always do round two.

Thanks for serving, man. I hope you get some time off the boat sooner than later so you can put your rig to good use. Thanks for checking out the pics.

You guys are welcome any time. Speaking of the Chama train... I have this little home away from home that is less than 15 miles from the east end of the tracks. That entire area is my backyard in the summer time, and I know every corner. Ever heard of Blanca Peak? It's less than an hour from the front door. I just need some accomplices

Beautiful build!

Thanks!

If you want to run it between the middle of May and the beginning of July I'll be back in Colorado. I won't have my 4runner but I'd be more than happy to document the attempt. :biggrin2:

Nice cabin.

i was saying I bet the picture doesn't do it justice. Just looks like a small rock garden. Not even that angled. Or I meant to say that. my bad. :bash:
