I found "The One", 2001 Sport Ed. TRD SC'd

I love the the Sante Fe wheeling pictures! The wife and I made a trip down there for the first time this fall; we drove her car and the whole way I was wishing I had the 4Runner, there were backroads and trails everywhere. Once I finish the trailer I will be making another trip down there for a little exploring and camping!

THIS excites me!

And so does all the stuff you have planned bigfish. Can't wait!

Those bumpers are sweet! Good call!

It has always amazed me how expensive rear bumpers are compared to the fronts... Bumper itself isn't that much. But to me, it's like having an ARB w/o a winch to have a rear w/o the tire carrier.

What made you dismiss welding one yourself? Did you back into a light post and are trying to hide it from us now? :)

Waiting is a painful game.

The discrepancy in cost between front and rear seems big when you're looking at an ARB up front, but if you take into consideration a decked out Shrockworks bumper, it flip flops and the front is more expensive again. Because the CBI is a custom fabbed piece as well, I'd say a comparison to a Shrock bumper up front would be more appropriate than the ARB since the ARB is a mass production piece.

RE making a bumper myself... I sat down and did a cost/benefit analysis on it. To have it turn out the way I would have wanted (in a reasonable amount of time) I would have needed a plasma cutter @ $1K+ in addition to the welder... plus raw materials, consumables, paint/primer, and I estimate 1-2 weeks of time to finish it.

Also, with spring/summer coming up, I don't want to spend all my time in the garage working on the damn truck. I want to be outside enjoying it.

Between the time, money, and the "I want it NOW" factor, I just decided to buck up. Plus I know I've got a proven design.

I'm stoked to see that CBI! It'll compliment the ARB nicely as well.

I am too, and I agree.

Just when I thought it wouldn't get any better......

Nice moves on the CBI. A couple of my buddies up North here, have the CBI and that thing is very burly and oh so cool. Can't wait to see it!

I'm assuming you went with the "plate" version and not the "hybrd"?

EDIT: how about I look at the invoice?? haha plate version it is!

That is awesome! Your truck is gonna be such a beast! (Well more so than it already is at least)

Get an ETA yet?

I missed your reply here. Next time you're planning on coming to NM, you should send a PM to Ripcord and myself. I'm not sure how familiar Ripcord is w/the state, but I know my way around northern NM very well, and we'd both appreciate the chance to check out your rig.

Yep. Definitely the plate. The hybrid looks akward to me for some reason.

:trophy: for the CBI. Can't wait to see it on. I'm curious to see how well your rear springs hold it up....

I think they'll do pretty well. I was in the garage yesterday putting some clear coat on the rear license plate trim and on a whim I decided to see how much my weight would affect the ride height.

I got a tape measure and then stood on very back end of the sliders near the rear tire and measured how far it sagged. I only lost a half an inch with all my weight on there (185 lbs). The CBI should weigh 170-180 w/the tire carrier, then add another 75 lbs or so for the wheel/tire.

Consider also, that I'll be losing the stock spare @ about 50lbs, the stock tow hitch @ about 40lbs, and the stock rear bumper & mounts @ about 35 lbs. So the actual weight GAIN should only be about 130lbs. I'm expecting to see the rear end sag about 1/2 an inch, MAYBE an inch, tops.

If it goes down too much, there's always OME 861 coils.

ETA 3-4 weeks for it to arrive on my doorstep. They said they'll begin making it next week.

Yup!!!! Definitely a Beast X 2 !!!

Thanks P! And don't worry, I haven't given up on the welder.

Oh I remember the day when I got that invoice email...and then the WAITING time!! Of course mine was exaserbated by a 2 week vacation I took to Canada, in which I then had to wait 6 weeks before I could get my hands on the new toy!!

I absolutely love mine, not sure if you saw the photos since I rigged it up...but it is one beefy bumper and is a very nice touch. It will look nice coupled with your ARB

I thought just maybe that I would have one upgrage that your truck does not have, but yet again you put me to shame! CONGRATS!!!

ameining,

I should have left a comment in your build, but man, your thread has been a huge help to me over the last couple days in making some decisions regarding this purchase. I was back and forth about several options, so I kept checking out your setup and it answered alot of questions for me. I saw you got a full size spare on there and it really finished off the look/functionality.

Not to mention your install pics are going to come in very handy when this thing arrives.

You'll always have that bad ass Shrock bumper up front, and I'm sure you've got more in the works as well. There's definitely no putting you or your rig to shame, that's for sure.

Im sure you will Like the CBI. They sure seem to hold up nice. You made a good call on not building it your self if you didnt have a welder. I remember cutting all the plate for mine with a grinder and cutoff wheels. Thats why my bumper is 1/8" plate. I would have liked thicker material but i didnt want to kill the grinder or bust out the oxy/acetylene torch.

And good call on the 33's. Sometimes you have to just sit down and think about what your going to do with the truck. Plus 35's are getting a little expensive to wear out just driving around. I love my 35's but then again i re-geared to 5.29s and dont drive the 4runner much at all. And now with 35's i have just been wheeling harder stuff and beating up the truck even more...

keep up the good work

How's the waiting game going?

I looked at ^^^'s thread about cutting the ARB. It does look a ton better. And the clearance is a lot better. But someone walking in on angle grinding a brand new $800 bumper is like being caught cheating on wife/GF...not something I want to do, but something that needs to be done. :D

Kidding.

But seriously. Looks a good deal better.

I think that what you meant to say above was "... on not building it your self if you didn't have a plasma cutter." You hit the nail on the head there man. I couldn't see hacking up bunch of 3/8" and 1/4" plate w/an angle grinder.

How's the waiting game going?

It's going good. 3 or 4 weeks. That time will go by in a blink. I'm keeping myself busy in the meantime with planning the construction of a privacy fence around our yard.

That... and earlier today I'm pretty sure I struck gold. I may be crossing another of the major mods on my list off very soon (at a big savings) if everything pans out.

So, more big news. I found out there was a 3rd gen at the local "U-Pull-It" Scrap Yard, and I've spent some time over the last couple days yanking some parts for my 'Runners.

I showed up yesterday and saw the truck for the first time...

As I looked around, I first noticed it was a 5 speed 4x4... I also noticed a hole with some cut wires where the "RR Diff Lock" switch would go... LIGHT BULB: IT'S E-LOCKED.

I go to the back and take a look... Someone beat me to the 3rd member. No big deal, the truck was showing 240K on the odo, and I wasn't too interested in a 3rd with that kind of mileage. What I was interested in was THIS!

The one holdup I've always had about retro-fitting an e-locker was that I'd have to modify my axle housing to accept an e-locked 3rd. The housing on my '01 is in great shape, and beyond that, I just didn't want to screw it up and have a truck w/a FUBAR'd axle housing.

Finding a complete, straight E-locker housing has always been in the back of my mind, but they are apparently more rare than Unicorn droppings.

But low and behold, there it was... So I went YOINK!!!! The best part was that I scored the entire housing for the LOW, LOW PRICE OF JUST $59.90!

I got it home and started stripping it and cleaning it up...

I think you know where I'm going with this now... It's about to be E-Locker Retrofit Time!!!

The housing is in great shape. I pulled the axle seals and the ends of the axle tubes have no scratches or marring from seal installation:

I checked it out from every angle and there is no damage to the housing... it's perfectly straight... and more/less rust free!

Also got some extras... The things on the left are the baffles that go inside the axle housing. I just pulled them out and cleaned them. Next to that is the E-Locker pigtail, the locker motor guard, and some free ABS/Speed Sensors & wiring.

All I have to do is take care of some small rust spots and give the housing a fresh coat of paint. After that I just have to track down a 4.10 E-Locked 3rd out of a Tacoma, bolt it into the housing, throw this puppy under the truck, pop the axles/brakes from my existing setup into the new housing, and wire it up....

.......and this '01 4Runner will be E-LOCKED!
