I hate this truck! EVAP help?

Im always perusing Craigslist for good deals and I happened to pick up this 4runner about six months ago which turned out to be a huge mistake. I've had nothing but trouble with it and the check engine light has come on at least 10 times for something different every time. The most recent one was a P0440 code for an evap leak which I had smoke tested at the shop and was diagnosed as a faulty charcoal canister. I bought a used charcoal canister on eBay from a dealer and installed it myself. It could be a placebo but the truck actually seemed quieter after installing it and it seemed to run a little bit smoother too. Fast forward 400 miles and I started up the truck and noticed it sounded a little bit weird. 120 miles later the lights back on again with the code P0440, P0441, and P0446. Is it possible I installed it wrong? I checked and all the hoses are still hooked up. I get no gas smell. Is it possible they sold me a bad one? Or is it more likely that it literally broke so soon after and that's when the noise started? I'm so frustrated, I just want to get it in working order and sell it but I can't keep up with all the issues. Truck had been well maintained and I have service records but it's just falling apart on me.

knowing the year helps. buying used stuff is hit or miss, especially for parts like that. could be the roll over valve on top of the tank. they crack and produce these codes. gas cap? maybe. if it's old, replace it.

I just had the P0441 code on mine for the 1st time. Replaced the VSV on the canister and fixed it! Mighr be worth a try in your situation.

this is what i did
1. Pull the evap canister
2. trace all the seams on the underside and look for cracks,
3. i found 1. went over it with a dremel and roughed up the surface
4. applied JB weld to seal it. spread evenly and seal it up
5. re-install

check engine light disappeared..3 years since

I wish it was that but service records show the gas cap and filled neck were replaced right before I bought it. Cap is OEM too.

It's a 2002! Yeah I took a gamble but $100 vs $600, you see why. I got it from a Toyota dealer on eBay and has a warranty, just frustrating.

Where did you get the vsv?! That's all my old one needed but I was told this isn't individually sold for 4runner's so I bought the whole can

No emissions in my county but I'm trying to sell it. My daily has a p0420 that comes and goes in cold weather that I just live with but this one I want to fix so it's ready to go when I sell

Omdz! So the gas cap's been done. The fuel neck's been done. Canister's been done and about a week later, this. Shop says it's the fuel check valves :yuck:

i mentioned that before. there is check valve on top of the tank that cracks over time.

It's a 2002! Yeah I took a gamble but $100 vs $600, you see why. I got it from a Toyota dealer on eBay and has a warranty, just frustrating.

I hate to break it to you but if you bought a "$600 oem part" on Ebay for $100 then it is absolutely a fraud part. The most you should be saving on legit parts is 25-40% off in my opinion. So for example $100 MSRP and $65 on Ebay. This just an example but you get the idea.

All vendors who sell sh$t and fradulent parts offer a lifetime warranty. That is their business model. Sell garbage, most people won't request a refund. It is their business model!

I've had numerous evap leaks over the years in my jeeps and other vehicles and always hear the gas cap theory and it never is.

It has always been a cracked, loose, and deteriorated hose of some sort. Probably just my luck cuz it is never a simple find.

Best bet for the OP is to go to a shop and have it smoked. Ask them to let you see the leak so you know exactly what part needs fixed.

Thank you! Turns out, my used canister was cracked. shop only charged $50 to smoke test and replaced it with a used one they sourced with a 6 month parts/labor warranty for $160. Very happy. Returned the other ffor a full refund and the truck is running great.
