I have searched but cant find the answer. Drl 2003 sr5...do I have them?

I am new to this forum but not to car forums in general. I have searched but havent found the answer. When I drive my 03 sr5, I dont appear to have drls...but instead this year included them.
Can someone help me with this answer?

On the ‘03 they would be lights in the bumper on the outboard side of the fog lamps. They function as turn signals as well. I’m not sure if the DRLs were standard on all models though, so yours may not have them. Mine are now in the headlight housings because I have the ‘06 projector headlights in my ‘04. The DRLs look much better up there inmo.

DRL were an option on 2003-2005 models, trim level doesn't matter and possibly on the later models as well but I'm not sure.

I have a 2004 Limited and it doesn't have DRL but I know other 2004s of all 3 trim options that do have them.

These guys are right, DRL was an option.

Without crawling underneath to take a front signal bulb out (they do differ between DRL and non-DRL), go on Toyota.com and click "owners" at the top menu, create an account and you can view the specs and any dealership service history of your vehicle.

I'm don't know if the DRL option involves any additional physical parts or wiring, but I do know that if you have them, the dealerships can turn them on and off via the diagnostic tool from settings in the ECM. It took a techician 60 seconds to disable them for me. Perhaps they could turn them on for you or at least see if that option exists?

The DRL option included a flasher relay and turn signal assemblies/sockets/bulbs that differ from the non-DRL versions. That flasher relay has a separate circuit for DRLs.

The Motor Vehicle Safety Act dictates all vehicles sold or imported into Canada after Dec. 1, 1989, must have automatic daytime running lights (DRLs).

Thus, all 4Runners in Canada are required to have them - safety first!

I would investigate if the bulbs for your DRL have burnt out (different filaments for DRL and turn signal), or if your DRLs were disabled via programming at some point … before crossing the border to pick up a Canadian model

Did you look up the specs on Toyota Owners to verify it is/isn't equipped with DRLs as an option? If it lists DRLs, the previous owner may have had a dealer deactivate it via scantool.

If it indeed doesn't have DRLs, you won't need a wiring harness. You'll actually be removing an existing harness. On a non-DRL 4Runner there is a sub harness between the flasher relay and the main harness that branches out to the fuse box, turn signals, hazard switch, turn signal stalk, body ECU, etc. For DRL's the sub harness is removed and the main harness plugs into the DRL type relay.

What I don't know is if there's a difference in body ECUs between the DRL and non-DRL models. The body ECU just opens and closes a ground signal to the DRL flasher relay, so if your existing ECU doesn't active the DRL circuit you could do a variation of the DRL bypass Toyota 4Runner DRL Mod

I have a DRL type flasher if you'd like to try it. I'll send it at no cost, and if it works I'll trade you the sub-harness that needs to be removed.

Just replace the non drl small harness and attached relay for the 2.5" drl relay.


I'll post a thread for this issue later. I found 1000 threads on how to disable..but never for enabling.
