I just changed my own cv axle!!!!!!!

OK so im a 17 year old kid with limited money and a busted up CV boot...what do i do? well i check on T4R to see what every1 else did of course!!! so i decided to get a whole new axle instead of just swapping out the boots. i researched plenty and decided to dive head first into this project, thinking it wouldn't be that hard....oh how i was so wrong! the actual process wasn't the bad part, only that every single bolt and nut was rusted through and stuck like a MOFO (thank god for PB Blaster). well i am happy to tell all my friends now that i am a pretty damn good mechanic that can save 300$ on a DIY. ;)

Congrats. I did this a few weeks ago on both of mine. It is a satisfying feeling for sure. Keep up the good work.
 
Nice job. This will come in handy when you break a CV on the trail.
It's good to learn your rig by wrenching on it.
 
Good work. That's probably a bit out of my league, still, but the things I do, it's a great feeling afterwards.
 
just make sure when you put in the cv, pound that axle in the front diff after it lines up with the diff gears. some people just push it in and they leak sometimes, you gotta pound that $hit while its fresh. sorry just watched american pie lol
 
I've pulled a CV like 4 times in a weekend, it isn't really as exciting the 2nd time around.

beat up on your truck long enough you can do it in the dark, i used to be able to change a CV in my old Chevy without taking the tire off (mainly cuz i changed so many, those and tie rods.)
 
ahhahhah oh there is no way in hell that I'm ready to change up some gears. and i actually broke this one while on a trail a week ago, i drove out of there in 2wd :cry: not fun at all. hopefully this won't happen again any time soon. not feeling the bloody knuckles and numerous broken socket wrenches.
 
one quick question...do i need to put more transmission fluid in from the leaks when pulling the old CV out?
 
No. You are pulling the CV axles from the front differential. Not the transmission. And to answer that question I would say you shouldn't need to. I just stuffed a couple of shop paper towels in the diff until I was ready to put the new one back in. The amount of fluid you lose is minimal. Maybe an ounce at most. If you change 6-10 of them then yes you should check and add accordingly.
 
Good for you. I paid $600 to have it done in 2007 because I didn't know how to fix it at that time. I impressed you tackled it as a 17 year. Get ready for a lifetime of saving thousands by doing it yourself. Start collecting quality tools... They'll pay for themselves.

Reminds me of myself changing the v8 engine in my 1972 oldsmobile (rebuild and re-installed and it ran like a champ ) when I was 16 - 17 years old. As an older guy its nice to hear someone your age getting interested enough to take that job on. Keep an eye on things re-check your bolts and fluids to make sure it is all good.

I overhauled my first engine when I was 14 for my 72 El Camino, just a little 350, then my next overhaul was a 455 out of my 70 Olds 442! So now, for the past 23 years, I only do my own work. I absolutely will not let anyone else touch my vehicle (unless its a must situation). Not only do you save the $$$, you also know its done right, at least most of the time, lol! I agree with you 100% that its nice to hear younger folks doing there own work!
