Thanks! I left the tires on the truck, took out the hubcap then used masking tape to tape the edges of the tire near the rim and where the hubcap was and the nuts. Then i spent about an hour cleaning the rims and getting all the dirt and grime out (long overdue) I used about three cans of plasti-dip (about $6 per can at the home depot) and did three coats, applying the last coat as the thickest. (i also did the three bolts at the bottom of the grille guard, you can see they were silver in the before pic)
Oh, and yeah the garage floor is epoxy, makes it real easy to keep clean!

Love it! I have a silver SR5 as well and plan on doing this real soon. Looks tight.

Thanks, when i sprayed it just didn't go that far back that it hit the rotor, so i didn't have to worry about it (i also held the can about a foot away while spraying)
I must say that if you want to do this, first try plasti-dipping your emblems first. The black on silver is an awesome contrast! Then go for the rims. Oh no she doesn't do any off-roading (unless you consider dirt or gravel roads off-roading lol) She's a 2wd and is stored in the garage between use. I was going to do the center caps, but saw someone else post pics of their rig with the rims done like this and thought it would leave a nice accent to complement the silver/black theme i got going on (although someone told me it looks kinda cop-carish with the grille and the wheels painted like that) i thought it made it look more aggressive! Eventually i'll do a lift and put more aggressive tires on, then make a build thread with all my pictures of each mod (there's a lot i did on the inside)
Agreed, I really like that touch.
I've been debating doing my wheels black too, and this thread pushes me closer to doing that.
P.S. you, me, Trevloc, and anyone else with a 4runner sporting silver with black accents should start a club! :lmao:

This seems like you are asking for disaster...:shrug:unless I'm reading it wrong, you had no lug nuts on your rig while you spray painted the rims???

Actually i didn't take the nuts out, i miss typed that. Just popped off the hubcap. I was going to take off everything but just ended up taping masking tape around each nut then taking off the tape after the third coat.

I used something that's called plasti-dip. It's kind of like spray paint but it's not. Were you able to get the inner part of the rims coated decently by leaving them on the car? One thing I noticed when I was doing my door handles is that if you don't get a nice layer around the whole object, there seems to be an edge left that's vulnerable to getting peeled off (by the elements, or whatever). Not sure if this is a cause for concern when doing the wheels, though.

For the most part (and you can see in my close up pic) i got all of the rim. If i were to do it again though, i would leave about a cm gap while putting the masking tape between the rim and tire because that's the easiest spot to miss and i had to touch up several spots around the rim's rim near the tire. Other than that it was easy to spray the rest, including the inside of the wheel spokes.
The good thing about plasti-dip is if you messed up you can either touch it up or peel everything off and do it again!
One last thing i should note is to do this mod in hot, dry weather. We've had several 100 degree days here in north texas and i left my car out in the sun since i started the plasti-dipping of the emblems. This allows the plasti-dip to sort of "bake" into the rims or wherever you apply it and trust me it isn't going anywhere. I scratched it with my fingernail today and nothing happened, although i would still be weary if it were to be scrapped with a rock or concrete, but then again if you were to scrape the paint of your car with a rock or concrete it would leave a mark too!

I may do just the center caps first. Kind of a reverse take on what you did.

Yeah, but if you haven't used plasti-dip before i would try it out on the emblems to get a feel of it. Then if your comfortable with it do your wheels.
