Guys I purchased a 2007 V6 4runner 4x4..

I took it home and averaged 18.5 on the first trip..

since then I have done everything that could be done to improve mileage or at least maintain it you would think (new plugs, clean MAF, carbon filter delete, new air K&N filter, premium gas, fuel injector treatment, switched to synthetic oil, new serpentine belt, new clutch fan (wasn't turning off), tranny flush, differentials/transfer case have brand new oil) NO lift, 1.5 inch allpro spacers, stock sized tires..

the last 4 fill ups I averaged 16.1 MPG.. Computer says 18.5 but is wrong.. NO CEL..

from what I have read..

-it could be a dragging front caliper, car doesn't pull....

-it could be an exhaust leak

-it could be a bad O2 sensor with no code?


any other suggestions?

Have you taken it to a dealership? Somethings definitely not right though.. Put a lift and larger tires on a 2wd and am getting about 20/21 mpg.. Hope you're able to figure out what's causing your mpg to be so low. Sorry I couldn't help on the actual cause.

I really don't want to start another thread either, but I'm having the same problem. I originally was getting 19-21 mpg. Now, I'm getting 15-18. I don't know what's going on. I haven't done all the same maintenance as OP, but I guess I'll have to start.

I've been thinking about this too for a long time and nobody were able to answer it. I'm supposed to replace my ect sensor to see if that would work but did have a chance to replace it due to stuffs in the way.

Have you tried the ect sensor? If you have a v6, it's located next to the firewall in between the cylinder.

Could be worse I get 11-13mpg consistently with no hints as to what's causing it. I've done everything with my limited knowledge on motors that I can. Only two cents I can throw your way is if you recently did your plugs, check the gap on them. I did mine recently and found that I had to adjust the gap on the Denso's I put in

whats confusing me is why the vehicle says I'm getting 18.5 on the display, but when i check manually, by trip distance since last fill up divided by gallons used to fill up equals 16.1..

So the vehicle ecu thinks its giving me 18.5 MPG, but why is the million dollar question.....

My MPG consistently says around 15.5-16.5, and I have 17 inch OEM 5th gen wheels with 265/70/17 tires and a mild Bilstein/FJ Springs lift. I have calculated it manually but that calculation was something ridiculous like 14. Is this typical or should I expect to be getting a higher MPG?

Ditto. New plugs new air filter, properly inflated tires, the list goes on. I filled up today 13.8....WTF. I drive like an old woman. I will say that about 95% of my driving is 45mph or lower, all city. Could that be it?

Sounds like we might have to settle with the fact that our trucks just don't get great mpg.

My town hardly has speed limits over 40. I don't often have a full tank used in town so I've never really been able to tell how bad my city mileage was, but I recently did and it was god awful. Like high 14's, low 15's mpg.

I don't know if you guys use fuelly, but if you haven't heard of it it's a good gauge on seeing what other people get for MPG.

The only crappy part is I see many people getting 18+ mpg and I'm on the lower end of the scale. Maybe it's caused by winter gas and high elevation. That's the only thing I can think of.

I think people who report 18+ mpg only drive down hill.

Yesterday I drove 160 miles in my 2006 V8 that included mixed interstate (65-70 mph), rural highway (60 mph), and gravel and dirt roads (20-40 mph) and I averaged 17.7 mpg. Almost 18 mpg! Computer said 19.1. This is about as best I can hope for. It is interesting, I also have a 2006 Tundra with the same engine and I have gotten up to 20.5 mph in it. In town I average 12-14 mpg in both vehicles.

Dealer is chasing down an evap code p0451 that keeps popping up. With all those part changes it still hasn't been fixed but it appears as though I've got better mileage out of it. [emoji106]

I have a 05 V8 w/ 706xx miles and I was avg around 12mpg.

Front right caliper was dragging. Just replaced all 4 calipers, rotors, and pads - getting around 14.7 now. So for $1k, I am able to get 2 more mpg...

I've replaced timing & serpentine belt, thermostat (appears to be leaking already and or again), water pump, air filter, and plugs.

I've come to expect shit gas mileage, but I'd expect maybe a tad bit more.

One thing I want to check if we ever get decent weather in VA is my throttle body. I'm hoping that there is nasty carbon buildup and if I clean it, I'll get 2 more mpg

Also, my tire pressure is around 35 on stock 17's.

There's no answer to the why but the display is commonly known as the Lie-O-Meter.

I know that it's a common problem, but I had a dragging front passenger caliper ~9 months ago. Replaced both front calipers, rotors, pads. If my mpg loss is because of that again it's going to be a bad day.

My V8 4runner is 100% maintained. No lights. Premium gas always used. Synthetic oil in everything. Stock size Michelin tires. I have always got 15-16mpg tops. Even on highway trips kept at 70mph I don't get much better. maybe 17-18 a couple of rare occasions. I drive very smooth. Both my other 3rd gens always got around 16mpg. Ive just come to realize it is what it is. Not one part is gonna get me better MPGs. The factory MPG readout is a BIG LIAR!! says om getting 18.5 mpg. Im not sure how people are saying they are getting 18+. Every customer I ever talked with at the dealer said they never get more than 16 average.
