I know this has been beaten..but HID/Fog questions.

New member here:

When I put a DDM kit in my '05 Corolla before I did a retrofit, I had to disable the DRLs. Do I need to do this for the 4Runner or is it really just mount the ballast and install the bulb?

@Jyn - you should not have to turn off the DRLs for the 4Runner. I know I did not have to in my 05.

HID Kits, BMW Aftermarket Bumpers & Lighting, DEPO - DDM Tuning
Is the site for DDM 35W, which you will want for the fogs, plus it's a slim ballast (smaller than the other styles)

Everyone has different mounting points for their ballasts - I know each of mine had to be mounted in different places due to length of the original wiring. I couldn't get mine to mount in the engine bay because the OEM wiring wasn't long enough to reach up into the bay. Plus you can't extend the wiring between the ballast & the HID light (according to DDM).
I had reverse polarity as well on my truck, so flip the OEM wire when plugging into the ballast - all HIDs will need a ballast. I've got 5000K in my fogs.
Hope it helps.

And when it says HID harness, Error Eliminator, and adapter cables, do I need to choose anything? 5K would look the same in both the fogs and lows correct?

Mounting location will vary. I used some high strength velco to attach the ballasts for the low beams in the engine bay, and zip ties for the ballasts when I switched it to the fogs. This isn't a big deal. Get your kit, start hooking it up, and you'll quickly see where you've got room to mount them.

Should look the same. I used zip-ties to hold my OEM wiring into the ballast as I had reverse polarity and the clip to hold the connector into the ballast was on the opposite side. It's not too difficult to "rig" it and get 'em working. I just waited until I had the HID kit ready to install and then figured out where I wanted to mount them.
I didn't/you shouldn't need any of those extra add-ons.

Alright thanks a lot guys, so H11 is correct right? I'm about to make the purchase and I just wanted to make sure this is correct.

Lows- 5K (for bright white) 55watt H11

Fogs- 5K (for bright white) 35watt H11

Jack

H11 low beams, 9006 fogs. The pure white isn't the best for visibility in foul weather. The 3000k would offer better visibility in bad weather. If you use your fogs for their intended purpose, 3000k would be a better choice.

And last, what does a guy have to get to change out the amber lights that come on whenever you lock/unlock the car to white as well? Those need to go!

What color is 3K? Is there a guide that show which colors correspond with which number?

Actually there is a guide on the DDM site that shows the color range and examples of each rating on a vehicle and where it sits on the color scale. Look in the downloads section of the site, where you will also find/print out your install instructions!

That's done by your turn signal bulbs if I'm not mistaken. It is illegal to change turn signal bulbs to white.

I believe you are correct and I think it's been mentioned before on here. Pretty sure it is illegal to do that swap.

Though most have had good experience with DDM, mine experience was terrible. Shipped incomplete kit, then sold me a harness that didn't work, and now have a defective component of some kind and am waiting (weeks) for a response from the RMA department... I must have 20 hours doing ultra-careful custom installs on two vehicles (Ducati and the 4 Runner) for a sub $100 kit that doesn't work right. What a joke...

Just FYI

That's the short version, the long version I'm not going to type out right now LOL.

OUCH, that sounds painful. I have heard that the shipping is absolutely terrible....I experience this too, myself when I ordered my kit. Took seemingly forever to get to me and even then once it was in the US, it was slow. Sorry you seem to be having defective & shipping issues!

ebay
150675756319 for the lows h11 6000k
160664351617 for the fogs 9006 3000k
all hid kits are simular, the company gets it from a source in china, some are better than the other, if u want plug and play, get those from ebay, but stay away from xentec brand, now if u want to do a retro which i recommend, go to theretrofitsource.com and get the products from them, u will be much beter off with a retrofit than the plug and play shiet. i was one of those that ran plug and play, it was bad with the glare on the 06+ model still not as bad as reflectors, but did a retrofit and was amzed on how much better the light was, then upgraded to some better projectors and that blew the cheaper projectors out the water.
Hey riceandpho, just noticed this post of yours and I am eager to do a retrofit on my 2005.

I am on the retrofitsource.com website but am completely lost. Can you post a specific link (or links) to what you bought (including the upgraded projectors) so that I can see what I need to budget for?

Is the install simple or do I need to get a mechanic to do it for me?

Budget for around $400. If you feel comfortable baking open your headlights, then the rest isn't terribly complicated. Just be sure you have your game plan all laid out before you go opening things up. It shouldn't take more than a day to complete.

Many vendors sell 55W HID kits comprised of 50W ballasts and 35W HID bulbs. They say that their bulbs are rated to handle up to 60W. All that means is that they are overdriving 35W bulbs with 50W ballasts. You end up getting slightly more light output however a shorter lifespan. Furthermore, overdriving 35W bulbs means that they will burn hotter which can potentially damage your OEM housing. Increased light output from 55W vs 35W usually translates to more glare (bigger arc) and an uneven light spread.

You also want to pay attention to what the starting draw is on the ballast that you are using. If the starting amperage draw is very high (common) I would suggest using a relay harness to ensure you do not damage anything.

XenonDepot HID kits come with low draw HID ballasts. The Xtreme ballasts draw up to 5A on a cold start and the Volt Hid ballasts draw approx 6A on a cold start. It is not uncommon to see some ballasts draw 16-17A on a cold start (very high).

Hard to beat DDM for the price. That's what I'm running, no complaints, they get the job done. You will want to do HID lows and fogs, but NOT high beams. HID's aren't meant to be turned on/off quickly, and doing so could cause premature failure. Since you turn your high beams on/off frequently, it's a better idea not to use them. For highs, you can consider running HIR's. They'll be an upgrade in output, will work better in the halogen headlamp, and be much more reliable due to the on/off issue you have with HIDs. This site sells the HIRs. You will have to slightly modify the base of the bulb for them to fit, but it's really easy.

Use this site to determine bulb size if needed.

DDMtuning sent mine pretty quick (9006 kit).
Unfortuntely the bulbs themselves are a little TOO LONG. Won't fit fogs or low beams. I'm still studying the situation but believe a dremel or file on the base or index tabs will NOT help at all.
Played around on the pass side low beam where it is easy to see what's wrong. Even though the fogs probably do not have the center shield like the low beams, they have the same length problem.

Ok now, what do I do with these bulbs and ballasts - make some real bright custom interior lighting !
