I made some square tube sliders

I figured sliders are just about the most simple thing you can make for your truck. While I like round 4x innovation sliders, I kinda got into the idea of square tubing.

From doing a ton of reading it seems like people do 2” tubing, 3/16 thick. Well I did buy that, but Jesus it’s heavy. So I went back and bought some 1.5” 1/8 thick tubing, which seems plenty stout to me. I also used 4 legs instead of 3, and I made some gussets out of 3/16” flat bar steel that I’m going to weld in.

Here they are, weighing in at about 35 lbs each, upswept at a 15 degree angle. I didn’t even take pics of the finished product not mounted to the truck since I was in such a hurry to get them done before a big trip this weekend:

I kept it simple and did all the angles at 45 degrees. It did add some extra work because you see I had to lop the top part of the joints off and weld in some filler pieces.

Still though I knocked these out in about 2 days because I was headed on a weekend long off-roading trip to Vermont.

I'm in no hurry, and totally understand not everyone wants to be a fab shop haha. But, if you decide you're looking for projects and some spare cash shoot me a price and we might be able to work something out.

I am in the Albany area for school and often am in Southern VT or Western Mass if you wheel or camp in that area often.

Beauty! 1.5” 1/8 tube welded in with 7018 is plenty strong

Nice looking sliders. What kind of welder was it? Flux or Mig?

Lincoln 140 amp MIG for the main construction then I had to attach it to my frame with inner core flux since I was in the street in the middle of Brooklyn.

This is a cool thread. My bro and I are working on his 98 as his offroad toy. Totally stock currently except for nice rims and tires from the PO. We're shopping for skids and sliders and you've really got me thinking about welding up the sliders myself after seeing this! I'd love to see more details on the designs. Working with a Flux core welder, but I think it could handle all this no problem.

Should be fine with the Flux, im doing them at work where I have tig and mig welders

These look good! The way a slider is typically loaded square tube is perfectly fine, round tube is just more popular. Don't forget to add the gussets, you can use more square tube for the gussets as well. Nice job with your DIY project, what are you building next?

Just curious with the weld on sliders vs bolt on... is there any concern for rusting between the frame and the slider mount?

Next thing I build will be a rear bumper - trying to keep it simple using 2x6” tube for the main structure.

Before I get to that though will be a new battery, upgrading the ground cable, and rebuilding and installing this used supercharger I bought a few months back.
