I miss my Hilux Surf SSR-X

I owned a 2000 Toyota Hilux Surf SSR-X turbo diesel while living in Japan and that is one vehicle I miss the most. Every option imaginable minus leather seats. Plenty of power and it loved going off-road. Here is a pic of what mine looked like - two tone, hood scoop, mirror on the driver side up front, spoiler with power folding mirror for backing up. Anyone else have owned one or import one?

I had a solid 95 Surf for two years 02-04 when I was in Fukuoka. I like the JDM appeal so I focus on that for my 00. Wish there was easier access to the good stuff Stateside.So far:

They pop upon yahooJapan auctions all the time. Believe it or not Japan is about the only country where Yahoo is still big. This is listed for 42k yen so about $450ish and comes with the back up mirror which drops down when you put the truck in reverse. Sadly enough thedamn shipping would eat you up.

I wish we would have gotten the turbo diesel motor here in the US, the 5vz is a great motor just really lacks in power for a 3.4L in a heavy rig. A factory rear mount spare tire rack would have been nice also.

If you open the rear hatch cover you will notice all the door opening and locking mechanisms are located on the left corner and the hilux surf has all on that end. For the 4runner they move the mechanism to the center by using cables.

Just tail gate, swing out I've seen for as low as $80. Shipping from Japan given the size ain't cheap, I'd say up to $1200??? If you're wanting one really bad if say look to our neighbors to the north. [MENTION=119139]CDNsurf[/MENTION] As many RHDs as they get from Japan they're bound to have a number of part shops to help you out. Correct, direct bolt on. Only swap I had to do was the ecu in the gate that controls your automatic locks.

I remember someone explaining why Toyota didn't do rear tire mounts for 4Runners...

Sadly enough the 4th Gen was the last 4Runner also badged SURF and sold in Japan. As the market for smaller more fuel efficient cars continues to expand in Japan, Toyota no longer sells the SURF over there. It sucks because there's minimal chance of some good JDM mods for that generation.

You'd be hard pressed to find a 3rd Gen over there now; many got shipped out after a few years: MiddleEast, Africa, Europe and Canada. Aftermarket parts are basically nonexistent these days. Every once in a while I check yahoo Japan but nothing exciting. :shrug:

[MENTION=44707]FoneRunner[/MENTION] got his hands on one, not sure from where. I wanted one initially but settled for the regular one. Nice yes, functional, not so much since the mirror is directly behind you.
