I need a new 4Runner

Quick introduction, I’m Rick. I’m not much of an off roader but will drive on snow to go skiing. The new 2015 4Runner Limited has me interested but I need some recommendations. Is the full time 4wd on the Limited the best 4x4 for snow covered mountain roads?

I don’t like the factory wheels and tires. I’m thinking some 17” rims and tires with some better all weather tires. I hope to maintain the overall height. Has anyone done this through the dealership with the TRD rims offered on Toyota website?

Some of the photos of your 4Runners have black factory roof racks. Very nice, are those offered through Toyota or is that custom?

sounds like the full-time 4x4 on the limited is perfect for what you need!

the black roof rack if you're talking about the oem one, is off the trail models. you're better off finding a set someone has taken off rather than trying to buy that from the dealer.

i haven't dealt with the dealer regarding purchasing the TRD rims, but i don't see why that wouldn't be an issue
 
I purchased our 3rd 4Runner, a 2013 Limited for my wife to make snow cruising easy for her. It works great but I concur on the wheels and tires. I ended up going with 17" method standards wheels with Goodyear DuraTrac's. It does great in the snow and all around.

Limited w/ full time 4wd should be a perfect for your needs, and would be an awesome ski vehicle. As far as the TRD wheels go, you will have to talk to your dealer. Some have no issues swapping wheels and tires at the time of purchase, while others (like mine) would not do it. Keep in mind that there are a bunch of other wheels out there that will cost less than a set of TRD's and do the same job. I wold also recommend that you test drive in the mountains of at all possible. A lot of people seem to get caught off guard by their new trucks, driving like trucks and not like sports cars.
 
Another vote here for the Limited for you, driving back and forth to ski here it has been amazing. Personally I don't think it even handles like a truck with the Xreas suspension system. The extra bells and whistles are nice as well.

Switching to 17" rims and tires should be no problem, you can always find cheap wheels on this site if the dealer won't give what you want. I was able to sell my limited wheels locally for more than the SR5 wheels cost me!

I just picked up a 2015 LE for the wife a few weeks ago and we just got our first winter storm here in Oregon a few days ago and got to see how the AWD performed, I've owned audi Quattro's, Bmw Xdrives, and Subies symmetrical AWD's to say a GMC Denali AWD for a short period of time (momentarily lapse of reason), I do a lot of driving for my business especially in NW winters and I'll say I'm very impressed so far, I will say the best of the bunch jmho is the subaru symmetrical AWD , however so far the LE has performed great and I'm running OEM tires. Blizzacks on order. I do agree the 20's are a bit much. The Xreas is awsome ! It rides very sure footed and corners great. I have a Rubicon unlimited and rides like a truck,to me you get the unibody ride if not better with still getting the frame on construction. Don't buy the wheels from the dealer, you'll be able to find OEM 17's on CL or ebay.
 
Great information, thanks. Now I just need to decide on a color. I was originally thinking black but the metallic in the sun... not sure about the new black. Maybe the graphite with black rims or white with polished rims. Does the white have pearl or mica or is it just white?

We got the attitude black with redwood leather and 3rd row, it was either the black or magnetic gray but we knew it had to have the redwood interior, we chose the black, it actually has a blue flake in it, looks very nice when the sun hits it,we liked it, but black Is very hard to keep clean as you know and if you don't have the patience when washing it, you'll see the squirles!! The gray and white are very nice too, the white is not a super white, kind reminds me of the yukon denali pearl white,it also has a sheen to it.

The LE color is "Blizzard Pearl". I've owned lots and lots of cars, and this is by far the easiest color to maintain I've ever owned. It continues to look good until really dirty. It looks especially good at night. "Pearl / mica" describes it well.

The wife's is pearl white.

I assume you mean what to do if you get different wheels? They are inside the wheel, yes. The tire shop that does your new tires/wheels just removes them and reinstalls in the new wheel. Easy peasey. They may try to sell you an "installation kit", which is little more than new grommets. Totally unnecessary, unless the tire monkey damages them.

Ask about these items before you make the tire deal.
