I need more light!

5th gen, pre-facelift.

I’m not willing to be that a-hole with HIDs low beams in things meant for halogen and I’m also not willing to pay the money for a good quality OEM looking retrofit. Here’s what I am considering:

Low beams - GTR Gen 3 LED - the usable light seems to be on par with a 35w HID kit but with the newest generation of Phillips LEDs they have really managed to mimic halogen filament placent and alignment so they can still be aimed correctly with the proper beam pattern and without blinding everyone else on the road.

High beams - not sure on brand but Im thinking a 55w HID. I don’t use the high beams behind other cars or with on coming traffic coming towards me anyway so glare for other drivers isn’t a concern. With the warm up cycle of a HIDs I’d lose the ability to flags the high beams but with a behind the bumper light bar I could still use that on the rare case that I need to.

I’m also considering swapping out my Morimoto LED foglight housings that I have now for the BAJA designs plug and play kit with the pro lights. I can’t seem to find anyone using that setup in a prefacelift though, is it proven to fit earlier 5th Gens? I know Rigids foglight kit is sold for facelift only so I’m skeptical about this.

Thoughts? Is there something else missing that I should look into.

I think you are missing the low beam HID story. :fish:

When I got my 2016 T4R I got flashed by oncoming traffic all the time even though I could not see well past about 50 feet with the stock headlights. I added HID low beams and adjusted the new head lights to the correct position and have not had a single flash since then in 10+ months. They allow for good visibility and don't seem to bother oncoming traffic on the highway or in the city. I am sure they would bother some people if they are pointed out to far/high, but adjusted correctly they do just fine.
 
So why not retrofit projectors then? I completely appreciate not wanting to be a d-bag and blind people, but a well done projector retro should eliminate the glare
 
I'm kinda in the same boat. I would love a legit projector retrofit, but realistically I wont do it. My s2000 had awesome lights, and my FRS wasn't too bad. I miss those lights, but I'd be okay if I could simply use the type of bulb that you described and be done with it.

Yeah my last car was bixenon with headlights that pivoted to light up around corners as you turn. Driving these 2 lane curvy roads in the middle of nowhere up in the mountains with zero ambient light it was very nice to have. I regularly have to turn off the cluster lights and radio display because it’s so dark out they mess with your night vision.

I’m very very picky about quality and fit and finish. Making them work is easy, making it look truly OEM came from the factory that way quality is not. Paying the true professionals $1000 for a pair of headlights is not something I’m willing to do at this point.
 
I'm one of those dbags who put HIDs in my halogen housing. With the lights properly aimed down, I never get flashed and my visibility is exponentially better than halogen bulbs. Is it a "proper" setup? Nope. Does it work without upsetting other drivers? Yup. After 1.5 years I'd expect to have been flashed at least once by now.

On topic? My positive experience with using HIDs without offending other drivers and potentially saving you a lot of money isn't on topic? Okay.

Every LED kit I've seen hasn't managed to effectively direct light as needed and glares. I think you're only option then is to retrofit proper projectors to achieve the results you want.

OK, let's try again. I really don't care about that jughead in the vid you posted, because if that's your idea of information, well ....

Again, how exactly did "they" accomplish "mimicing" a halogen filament with an LED? Because those two light sources could not be more different in how they create/emit light.

Now if you want to buy them, I could care less, just hate to see misinformation posted.

Philsey.... Shhhhhh just let him do what he needs to do lol.

Now my response for what it's worth and I don't know why there was a topic since you are just bashing everybody's answer and have your own mind made up before you posted... I wouldn't put led's in if you paid for them. Nowhere near as good as the quality of light from a good set of HID's. HID won't give you the glare neither.
