I need your help

Hey guys...I have a 2001 Toyota 4 Runner with 226,000 miles. My check engine light came on, so I took it to the mechanic who tells me that I need two new catalytic convertors. $810.50...NOT!! So, searching through the forum I discovered that I can replace my O2 sensors. I also saw on here where you can buy an O2 simulator.

Question.....are the O2 sensors the same? If anyone can give me part numbers that would be great!! If I buy the O2 simulator....do I need one or two of them?

Also...I live in Texas so I don't have to worry about California emission laws.

You need a Denso 234-9002 upstream and a Denso 234-4261 downstream. 2001 is easy because there are no choices. For the Cat efficiency issue, you could try replacing just the downstream sensor, usually the one responsible for that P0420 code. If that doesn't do it, one simulator on the rear sensor is all you need. The rear sensor is the one whose only job is keeping tabs on the cat and setting the P0420 Cat efficiency code.

Amazon or RockAuto usually has the best deals on Denso sensors.

I have a 4runner with 1 catalytic converter which got stolen ~5 months ago in Texas .

I had it replaced with an aftermarket one for $60 (after 40% coupon at advance auto) and $80 install fee (free if you know how to weld). Figuring you have 2 converters, you could probably get yours done for $200 total if you wanna go that route.

Believe it or not, CataClean from Mr. Gasket works very well. The light comes on when the cat is at 96% efficiency or less. (Which is absurd IMO). For $20 a bottle, I'd try it first. I used it on one if mine that had dual cats, light never came back on.
