Hello everyone, last week or so I post a thread about how I never change my oil filters. Well that discussion didn't lead anywhere. Well, I had an idea to take off my oil filter and cut it open to check out the insides. A few details, this is the oil filter for my Ranger. I the got Ranger with 140k it now has 220k so this filter has 80k on it. These are the pic, looks good to me. It was harder than I though to open the filter.

Have to agree with the comment above, Fram isn't known for making quality filtering products; the bypass valve looks pretty crappy.
But that is surprisingly cleaner than I would have expected for an 80k engine, not that I doubt you but its somewhat suspicious that we're not seeing any particulates in the filter element, its something I would expect to see due to natural wear and tear.

Well I'm not changing another oil filter. It was a mess to change it. I was surprised too after reading previous post I thought the filter was going to be in bad shape but it looked really good for having such many miles. I couldnt see anything in the filter other than oil.

The filter looks kind of clean because it has been bypassed about 15K ago since you last put it on. So when the filter got plugged the oil wasn't even making it through the filter media for the rest of 65K, it was short cutting through the bypass.
The stuff you don't see right away takes a beating. Rings, bearings, cam lobes, etc.
I don't know if it's available for Toyota but, the racing oil filters has no bypass built into them. Running those in a 80K situation won't be pretty.

I was thinking the same things, but allow me to play devil's advocate for a minute; not because I agree with this rather flawed and somewhat lazy reasoning, but because curiosity gets the better of me sometimes...
Would the filter not have more particulates in it even if the bypass were active? I would suspect that it'd be a little dirtier than this or are Fram filters just such utter crap (not that I doubt it) that all that stuff got washed out through the bypass?

this is ridiculous, so out of pure laziness you don't change your filter...because its messy...I sincerely hope you tell the next owner about this ritual.
Anyways this goes to show why it is a gamble to buy a used vehicle. Changing oil and filters is maintenance and insurance. Picture # 7 I can see the metal at the bottom right of the oil puddle. Look close (through the oil) and you can see the metal sitting there.
Picture three, I can see the metallic metal shavings sitting on top of the valve at the bottom of the filtering material.
I have opened filters with 10k on them that look worse than this...why...?
I think your filter has been bypassing so long it effectively removed the buildup from the filtering media. I'm just guessing, but it's the only logical explanation I can think of give the "cleanliness" of your filter compared to others I have seen.
Just my thoughts. In an any event, I thank you for sharing the pic.

Weird, dude. Oil changes are the cheapest insurance there is, so half-assing them for eighty thousand miles is whack. My shit gets changed every 2500-3000 miles.
And taking off an oil filter isnt thaaat messy haha. In fact, i'd say on average, my garage, and my clothes and skin, get dirtier with the oil drainage step than the filter change step.

Anyone know if the k&n oil filters have bypasses? Part number HP-1002 specifically? Not that it would be a problem for me, I change my filter with the oil every 5-7k

i second this. i read part one and i get how if it aint broke don't fix it and all the bs that got talked about there, but lets be honest here, if changing oil filters was such a huge scam, we would have heard about it by now. If [MENTION=55855]zopperman[/MENTION] and others can install entire suspensions and do maintenance in the street in december, then you can man up and get "messy". last time i changed my oil i didn't even get my hands dirty.

Considering some of the reactions you get, you should have had a little fun and said that you've decided to stop changing the oil.:lmao:
I won't be adopting your procedure any time soon, but I've wondered many times myself how much overkill is involved in 5k filter changes.
Case in point, the filter interval doubled overnight (5k to 10k) with the switch from the 4th gen to the 5th. Somehow I doubt it was the result of a break-through in high tech filter technology.
