I never change my oil filters- part 2 with PICS

I wonder what other things the OP doesn't bother changing like home furnace filters, coffee filter, toothbrush, maybe even his underwear. Lol. j/k

Dude why do you have to go there? Now the OP is going to post pictures of his never changed underwear to "prove" you don't need to change it.

In "Part 1" I made a comment about my experience with European Factory filters disintegrating after a single oil chnge interval. A fellow tech was just telling me that GM's extended oil change intervals are resulting in their filter media also experiencing this disintegration and in some cases clogging up passages. Not to mention I have seen a lot of nasty filters (I wish I had pictures now...) as well as one or two that caused oil pressure issues and those that never did because they were always bypassed.

While I don't disagree with your point, it becomes a matter of common sense I think. At what point do you have to have experience running around naked in public before you can tell someone to put on a pair of pants in public for example?

So we shouldn't use oil filters at all? I mean they all can fail. Fram sells a lot of filters. It only makes sense that you will see more problems with them. I would be willing to bet they control at least 75% of the market share in sales in the DIY area. Usually the only place you hear negative comments are from people repeating false information from those that obsess a little too much about oil filters or the Amsoil crowd.

The internet is a terrible place to look for unbiased reviews...how many Fram users out there would be compelled to make an account on a forum just to tell everyone how uneventful it was to use a Fram oil filter if they had absolutely no issues?

I don't doubt that they have failures (like every other brand), but it's obviously going to be the user who ends up with a failure that will do whatever they can to voice their experiences and let it be known. Just because we here 10 failure stories and 0 success stories does not mean there's a 100% failure rate.

If you believe everything you read on the internet, you'd think that a fram filter will instantaneous implode upon first use, and any other oil besides amsoil will kill your engine 10 seconds flat, lol.

Obviously this would never be possible, but what you people need to be doing is getting the stats straight from Fram themselves before pointing fingers, since they of all people know how high of a failure rate they have in all the products they make.

That's why I run Purolator filters.

Here's the reason I DON'T run Purolator filters.

Back in the 90's my wife owned a Honda Accord. I usually use Fram filters, but the place that sold them was out the filter for the Honda. They also sold Purolator...so I bought that one. After I put it on it leaked like a sieve.

Purolator made ONE filter to fit the Honda Accord and the Mazda 4-cylinder. While Fram and Wix made separate filters for both. The filters were extremely close in size..but NOT close enough. The gasket on the Purolator filter didn't fit into the groove on the Honda engine block. Purolator was trying to cut corners on the filters. Fram and Wix didn't.

What I was getting at was that factory filter elements are having difficulty doing extended oil change intervals and even regular oil changes without the elements degrading quite a bit; I wouldn't even think you'd find much of a filter element left in those vehicles if you tried to run them 30k+

I never said that we shouldn't run filters, rather I say we should run them and that we should be changing them around the same time you do an oil change as they are cheap insurance and even if you change them early its not a lot of money wasted.

I am an owner of 2 auto repair businesses in Atlanta. One of them is a fleet repair business. In this shop we use Chevron oil in bulk for pretty much everything unless a customer specifies something different. We use Purolator, Wix and Donaldson oil filters.

We have been in business for quite some time and most of the vehicles we service we started servicing them when new. We have only had 1 major engine problem that could be oil related but it was very hard to tell. It was a 2003 Ford F-150 with a 5.4L. One of the valves took a crap and did some pretty heavy damage.

We have multiple and multiple engines that have in excess of 300K on them that just keep on rolling with no major engine or oil related issues.

We run a 5K mile change interval on the majority of the gas engines. Even with the newer GM models that have the OLMS we still go with 5K.

I guess my point here is that if you change your oil and filter on a regular basis, the chances of having a oil related engine issue is going to be pretty nil.

In regards to our Toyota customers, one of our customers is a pest control company. They have Tacoma's and Tundra's with the 2.7L in most of the Tacoma's and the 3.4 and 4.0 in the Tundra's. I can recall a Tacoma with close to 380K and a 3.4 Tundra with over 400K.

i can't believe this thread is still getting action. to each their own, it's your truck pamper/abuse it however you wish. just don't bash it when it fails because of negligence.
