I bought new wheels and tires for the runner. 285/75/16s on procomp 16x8 with 4.25 backspacing. Little did I know it wouldn't clear the calipers at that backspacing. :der: Thank goodness the pepboys where I went had a 1/4 inch spacer in stock.

Anywho, I thought this would have fixed my wobbling drivers rear wheel, but it hasn't. I did a search and found that it may be the axle. How does one check the trueness of the axle? Also, where would I buy an axle for cheap?

Which Pro Comps? Stock or Tundra calipers?

When I bought my wheels at Discount Tires they agreed to test fit the rims first....they cleared the Tundra 231 calipers and the UCA's without spacers.....285/75/16 tires
 
I see your in middle river, i'm in dundalk off of eastern ave. For your question, have you had your runner put on a lift to see if anything is bent? Any weird tire wear on the old driver's rear tire?
 
I am not sure of the details. When the wheel is mounted are seeing any kinda movement when shake the wheel from top to bottom. just curious.

I'll check tomorrow, it's starting to get dark already, but I remember having a tire place check the wheels to make sure there wasn't any bearing issues.

Oh, not far at all! I'm right off compass and middle river rd, if you know where that is.

I've had the bearings checked at Mr. Tire after installing the tires but never checked for bends. I'm not sure where to look. I was figuring I'd pull the axle out and it would be bent?
 
I checked the wheel for any play in the bearing, seems fine. How do you check the axle?

first... in my opinion...if you pull the axel...be prepared to replace seals

2nd...hard for me to believe you can have a bent axle....that would take so much abuse to make happen unless your some major rock crawler

I tried to watch the video, but it said it was private.

It's really very easy to check the axle. With the wheel off, and the brake drum removed, and the rear axles housing supported safely, you can:

1. Have someone start the vehicle and place the the vehicle in drive, and watch for up and down(radial) movement, or side to side(lateral) movement. Do not have the driver step on the brakes, just turn of the engine. You'll have to put the drum back on to use the brakes.

Or

2. Place the trans in neutral with the engine off, have someone rotate the other side wheel, you can watch the axle move and see if it has any runout as described in procedure 1.

You can also put a ball joint dial indicator on it to actually measure the run out.

What do you think it could be? I thought bearings too, doesn't seem to be the prob. Check the video and let me know what you think.
 
If the run out doesn't show anything out of tolerance. One question comes to mind from the picture above are u still using the factory lug nuts with these rims... if so Then your problems may be with the lug nuts because toyota uses a lug nut that is called a Mag type seat. If the rims are say a conical seat and u have a Mag type seat on the conical seat of the rim your rim in a nutshell is technically loose and the lug nuts are basical wallowing out the seat of the rims.. See the visual below

The wheels are brand new and the old wheel did the same exact thing. I wonder if I damaged the axle when I replaced the seals. Is it easy to damage the axle?

More likely the axle was already damaged. And yes, it is easy, all it takes is a lateral bump like sliding into a curb.

also , if you did new bearings when you did new seals, it would not be the first time Ive heard of a shop bending an axle when pressing on a bearing
and agree with correct lug nuts...but I would think the shop that did the install would have caught that

Should I replace the axle, or get it repaired?

Also, anyone have a brand of lug nut/ wheel lock they recommend?
