I took my truck in for an alignment yesterday - when I picked it up, I found a bag of homemade cookies with a note thanking me for my business.
They were good cookies, too.

wonder if it'd be OK to drive to Salt Lake for an alignment...

Not the same, but better IMHO. Once got a haircut a few months back, and afterwards, the lady put that stuff on her hands barbershops use on your neck and such if you get a close shave. (Which I did.)
So the lady's applying the stuff, and rubbing it into my neck...and about 2 or 3 minutes later I realize she's still doing it. I guess she caught me cocking an eye in the mirror....she said "You looked like you could use a neck and shoulder massage."
Pay $7, get haircut AND 15 minute massage...good deal in my book.

My small town Big O just sent me out with a free alignment half the time. He got my business whenever I'm back home.

There is a place in Cincinnati, OH called Auto4N and every time you get service done... no matter how small they always give out swag... their shirts are pretty sweet looking to boot. They always follow up with a post card mailed to your house thanking you for your business. It's the small things like this that are forgotten by the big box chains. It also helps that there management and mechanics are all experts.

There is always something to say about going the extra mile. I try to give great customer service, and great prices for all the work that I do in my shop. While the food and candy is a great idea, it can come back and bite you. The last dealership I worked at was giving out donuts and snacks on Saturdays. One time a kid got sick and the mom blamed it on the free food. Turns out the dad was a liar...I mean lawyer and sued the dealership. We never gave away snacks again, and they even stopped the free coffee for a while.
As for the merchandise like the Carabiner and the t-shirts, I do have some t-shirts that I occasionally give away. Those things do bite into the budget though big time, and being a smaller town business, things like that add up fast.
