Probably. Sure.

I doubt any available skid plates would help much. I haven't done the math, but rifle rounds make swiss cheese of 1/4" mild steel plate, so I would bet that a piece of rebar, with the small frontal area, with the vehicle moving over a few MPH, would result in a similar outcome regardless of skidplates.

Talk about all around luck! The under body of the car catching the rebar exactly at the right spot, the rebar missing the driver's butt, no back seat passengers (hopefully), etc...:shocked:

I guess the only way skid plates could've possibly helped out in this situation is providing a smooth belly for the rebar to hopefully glide across instead of getting hung up and driven through the vehicle.

I absolutely do not think a skidplate made out of any practical thickness will stop a piece of correctly angled and anchored rebar from going through a 4,600 lb vehicle being driven at 70 mph...but I work in engineering. In order for this to happen just like in the above picture - well, you probably have a better chance of getting hit by lightning while on your way to buy the winning powerball ticket. Anyway, if the same conditions were to occur in a 4Runner with skid plates the rebar (along with the kinetic energy of said 4,600 lb vehicle travelling at 70 mph) wins every time.

Wouldn't the skid plate make some difference in guiding the rebar though? I see how rebar would pretty much stab through any thickness skid plate if we're talking about, for example, a direct perpendicular strike; but let's say a completely open bottom (with edges and protrusions to catch on) versus a completely smooth bottom as depicted below.

The first example is your vehicle approaching the rebar sticking out from the ground at the depicted angle and the tip of the rebar just so happens to be in line with the sheet metal edge protruding from under your vehicle. Since they come in slight contact, it would seem likely that the rebar gets "pulled" upwards (and through the vehicle)?

Whereas in the second example, the rebar tip is also at the same angle but just touches the smooth bottom of the skid plate. Since they are only in slight contact and happily sliding along, it would seem less likely for the rebar to get "caught" on the underside...but I work as a computer graphics artist op2:

Thanks for the engineering insight. I know some people around here think you can be a bit harsh on some things but since I know a few engineers, I've come to learn that facts/science mean more than feelings haha.

The problem is TRUTH is harsh. People nowadays are so used to being coddled and treated equally and being politically correct that when someone, like me, don't play the game they get their "feelings" hurt and respond by calling names. No matter what anyone says, there will always be ugly people, dumbasses and losers that will offset all the pretty, intelligent winners. Many will be in between so now you have my philosophical thought for today. Appreciate the kind words though. You are now off my list for one week because you said something nice and I will reciprocate lol.

It's like the Dunning–Kruger effect in which inexperienced individuals overestimate their abilities to accomplish unknown tasks while experienced individuals underestimate their abilities. But here it's that individuals overestimate the validity of their assumptions without actual analysis.

I'm just glad you're willing to spend your time doing the analysis. It's much easier for me to read your post than to try the calculations myself.
