I picked up a 98 SR5 a few months back. The moon-roof had some serious problems... The rails were broken, the window leaked and the cables that move the glass had snapped. This particular moon-roof was installed as a dealer option by the American Sunroof Company and as such my Toyota dealership did not have in-stock parts for it. To make a long story short, repairing the moon-roof would cost me more than I had paid for the whole vehicle. So what to do?
Well as I am an electronics technician I thought, what the heck, lets stick a TV in there... The following pictures are the result. There were a lot of things done that you cant see including a full Infinity sound system and power inverters under the seat. Ill upload pictures of those things later.
I've got lots of left over moon roof parts if anyone needs something

Added rails and relocated the boards for the TV
The power and video boards are now behind the TV to reduce its thickness.

The TV is installed into the old moon-roof enclosure and all the cables are attached.

The menu buttons are relocated in the dash (wires were all extended)

The ash tray now holds a 3 to 1 HDMI switch for laptops phones or game systems.

The TV Slides in the original rails and moves quite smoothly.

Nah JK. That's pretty neat! Does is fold down? Seems like a neck pain to try and look at it like that.

Yea I wanted it to fold down but there just wasn't enough room in there to design a smooth hinge system. You cant tell in the pictures but the whole thing is at a slight angle. When the driver and passenger seat are layed back the viewing angle is pretty good. Its a little crazy when I run Nav from my phone on it though As soon as the weather perks up ill bring her out side and get some good pics with the real camera.

Not sure where you're located, but if that is a regular flat screen TV, would not the extreme temperatures virtually cook or ruin the internals of the TV? Especially with it being in the roof?

I'm just curious.

Crazy setup though, very nice.

Im in Cali, Near the coast so its not crazy hot but you are partially correct. I only use the TV if the roof is not being baked. If the TV is off the sun doesn't get it hot enough to do any damage however if its hot out and the TV is on there would be a real risk of burning it up. Of course at night or on a cool day there are no problems.

Hmm very cool design. Nice way to make use of the tv but how often will you use it?

May i suggest lining the surface area of the top( or back) of the tv with that sunshade material you see in car windshields? It should help prevent serious heat hitting the boards, especially the capacitors!

Believe me, I would have loved to get an oem moonroof back in there but it wasn't possible. This thing was after market. Its hard to tell the screen is even there when you slide it back and I bolted and sealed the original window into place so that it can pretend its still a moon-roof.

I don't use it that often. Mostly on road trips. Honestly half the fun was just building it. Duno, it gets used once or twice a week..
There really is hardly any room between the tv and the glass. It would be hard to fit reflective material in there but it might be worth a try.
