Every single in dash nav or DVD system seems to have SEVERAL flaws if you read enough reviews... It's about finding one that does what you use the most often best for the price you can pay.
I got a kenwood dnx-9960 because I knew I'd be playing music from my iPhone and using the GPS more than any other features and it excels at those things. It didn't hurt that I found a factory refurbished one with full warranty for half price, but I searched for months and almost ended up not buying one.
Every unit I researched had several people saying that model was a piece of junk because it was missing some key feature they loved (for instance the sony with tom-tom won't shuffle your entire iPod, just albums)

I have the pioneer appradio it doesn't have a disk drive at all but it works for me and only costs 350.00.

Hi guys, where did you get yours from?
Please post a pic of your truck's dash (i want to see what it looks like installed in a 4Runner) and some details on your install if possible. Did you use an external amp to power it or was the connection to your existing speakers straightforward? I'm assuming you did not upgrade your existing JBL speakers?
Please post pics of your antenna. Did you also install a backup camera? Details on that please.

bookmarked..am in the same shoe as op. kinda narrowed it down now to pioneer p4300dvd or the jvc nt30hdt.
i just need awesome sound/back up camera aux/ext amp aux/5 or more eq settings/big screen /dvd.......not so keen on iphone integration/navigation/bluetooth.

As long as you dont require a rear USB input, the JVC is pretty sweet. It has a 6.2 inch screen, not a full 7 inch.

I do. It is awesome. It has all the features I was looking for in one without having to buy a bunch of add on modules. It isn't cheap, but when you add on the features like nav, HD, Traffic, it is cheaper to get it all in one.

sorry for the late reply on this one. I ended up returning the App Radio, great in theory but poor execution on Pioneer's part. The thing was slow to boot, the OS was buggy and slow, just a general PITA to use. Luckily I bought every thing from Crutchfield, 60 day no questions asked return policy. Swapped it out for Pioneer's AVH-P4400BH, larger screen, simpler straight forward operating system, still can use my iphone for motion X, plays DVD and Iphone Vids, bluetooth and HD radio are standard. Installed the e brake bypass which works great purchased from AVH Bypass. Had already installed a Boyo license plate backup camera which still works great and axxess steering wheel controls. Also using Pro Clip phone mount
If the pic is upside down, I have no idea why...

I started doing some research on these new Pioneer units and I am still confused about what is needed for navigation - clearly it requires some add-on, but I have no idea what that is.
I noticed you saying you are using MotionX - this is one of the nav apps for the iphone. Can you elaborate some more please? Are the maps visible on the Pioneer 7 inch screen or are you still having to squint at the iPhone screen for the maps and then just using the Pioneer unit for the audio?
Can you also post some screenshots of the system when it's being used for navigation?
I also appreciate the fact that you gave feedback on the other components you are using:
1. e brake bypass which works great purchased from AVH Bypass.
2. Boyo license plate backup camera
3. And axxess steering wheel controls. - is this a Pioneer add-on module?

Motion X is a navigation app for the iPhone, and yes it does display on the 7" pioneer display. All of your inputs are done on the iPhone and you are limited to music from your iPhone or pandora when motion x is in use. But the display is nice and big and easy to read, the volume mutes when voice guidance chimes in.
You can add a navigation module to this head unit but if you have an iPhone there is no need. Motion X is $.99 + $10 /yr for voice guidance, includes traffic routing and no need for map updates, so not a bad way to go IMO
The axxess steering controls are purchased separately from the head unit. The wiring was a little confusing but no programming is required, the axxess unit learns on its own in a few seconds. My 4runner only has the volume, channel and mode buttons and the do exactly that on the pioneer unit.
I'll post pictures shortly

Last question - did you consider getting the 8400 model instead of the 4400? Was it budget or was it features you didn't need? I checked the features and the main difference is that the 8400 has a detachable face whereas the 4400 doesn't.
Other differences are that the 8400 has Mixtrax and dual outputs - so you can watch video on other screens. 4400 does not have those, but these extra features other than the detachable face seem superfluous to me.

Budget was one for sure and it looked like it had a different app mode so my fear was I would be heading down the app radio path again. I gave the app radio a full 60 days pushing the crutchfield return policy right up till the end, i cant cut the app radio any slack it was complete garbage. So long way of saying it looked like the 8400 and the app radio had similar app modes not shared by the 4400. That being said with the 8400 not on the street yet I have no actual play time with so I'm just guessing.
Couple notes on install, as far as difficulty factor, the head unit was fairly easy (I have installed a few of these in my time), steering wheel controls were a little tougher just figuring out the wiring. The camera was a pain, taking apart the hatch, routing the wires, very time consuming.
To use the video out on the iPhone you will need an adapter from pioneer make sure you order that. I also use a phone mount by pro-clip with a pass through connector which holds the phone securely and allows you to not have to plug and unplug the iPhone cable.
