I want to beef it up w/o going broke

So i was looking at getting a new muffler since they can be relatively cheap with a big difference in sound. I live in Alabama so it can be assumed that i have to deal with a lot of rednecks and their overly-obnoxious rat tatatatatatata every time they accelerate. All i want is a solid rumble idling and a crisp, deep growl on acceleration, nothing really loud or attention grabbing. Any suggestions?

Actually, Alabama tends to have a bunch looking to do what you want. Everyone rips their mufflers and cats off to make them sound like a tank.

I'd recommend a 3 chamber flow master or something else that is close in size and baffling to the factory muffler. Otherwise you're going to start getting loud. If you go to youtube and search for tundra, sequoia, or 4runner and different muffler names you will find several videos that'll let you know how different setups sound on the 4.7L.

I have the Gibson, sounds amazing and wqs relatively cheap for a cat back exhaust. Not too loud but its nice and deep and very obviously a V8

where abouts in Alabama are you? I have a Magnaflow bullet style muffler, it sounds nice IMO even if it has some gnarly drone at low RPM under light load. Look at the Magnaflow Cat-Back system. It does exactly what you are looking for. I thought the stock sound was wimpy for a V8 and the Magnaflow does not disappoint. Definitely the best mod I have done.

Cat-back systems are generally a waste of money, just swap out mufflers if all you want is sound. Most systems retain the same exhaust diameter as factory and are really pricey if you want stainless. You aren't gaining any performance over the guy that just changed his muffler.

The Gibson I got is stainless and is about $400. IMO, it's generally a cleaner sound than just a muffler swap but nothing wrong either way.
