Icon install

First off, thanks to KodeRush, eddiebx, sp8ball for their awesome write ups. If I had any questions on what to do next, the write up produced by these lads was extremely helpful.

My goal
- improve the stock ride quality
- support Shrockworks bumper
- be able to handle the occasional off road trip

Parts installed:
Icon 58746C (CDC Valve and standard coils rated to support 130lbs)
Icon 52700-rear springs
Icon 56505- rear shocks

The install went fairly well...it took me around 8 hours to get it done. I am not extremely mechanically inclined and was able to knock it out. I did read and re-read directions to make sure I was doing things properly.

All in all, I think I did a great job and the ride seems great! I did go to get an alignment today from Firestone and when I went there, they were unable to produce an After alignment sheet (printer was broken)...they only had before. When I told them I wasn't going to pay for it they offered to prove to me by throwing it back on the alignment rack and looking at the specs. This went bad for them. Although the specs were much better than before, they were all still out of spec. The manager got embarrassed and told me that he would not charge me.

As you can see, they did *something* but didnt quite bring it home. I got approx 3" of lift in the front and rear from 2" set springs..so I am hoping they will settle. I did not adjust the front coilovers bc they are supposed to come with 2" preset. I plan on putting my Shrockworks bumper on this weekend so I will probably wait to get a real alignment until then.

Question: will driving it 50 miles/day create bad wear on my tires? Also, it seems on average it took people a couple months for the springs to settle, did anyone have this happen sooner?

Did you not install UCAs?

Printer broken or out of paper means "We don't want to show you how bad we are at alignments"

I would take it to Hi tech auto, they are in your area.

I didn't do UCA's yet. I wanted to see how close to factory they could get without doing UCAs. It looks like I am going to have to bite the bullet on the UCAs to get the caster to set.

I dont know why they couldnt set the toe though. I actually live in Richmond, VA at the moment but ill most likely make the trip up to them. Ive heard nothing but positive things about them

UCA Suggestion...

Go ahead and order those new UCA's tonight. :crybaby::cheers:

Make sure you check out JBA Offroad. More articulation than a uniball, in a BJ design. I put them on my vehicle, had 3.5 deg caster right away. I am going to try and get it increased next time, adding some weight soon and I plan to tweak the height at that time. I want to be a half inch above where I am now. I put on Icon as well. (This is directed at the original poster, by you had the perfect quote!)

Thank guys! It seems that UCAs are inevitable.

Find a new alignment tech. They should have gotten much closer than that. That is terrible. I would ask for my money back too.

With UCAs you can get the alignment to factory spec. Without UCAs you can get very close to factory spec and your numbers will be slightly off but the numbers are so close you may not even notice.

Ask SSDuck8, we put Icons without UCAs on his and it drives perfect. The alignment print-out was slightly out. Just be sure they equally out on each side. A good alignment tech understands that and will do it without you needing to ask.

That being said, you already demonstrated you want a great set-up so you should go a head and get UCAs.

Thanks misterquad!

I have an appointment set up for tomorrow. I was going to wait until my shrockworks bumper was installed because I am afraid it will sag some and will have to adjust the coilover. Fingers crossed it doesnt sag much!

On another note, I wanted to double check that what I did was right. I installed the radiator support brackets and noticed that the Drivers side has a lot less clearance than the passenger. In fact, I didnt even need to adjust the passenger side (may put it on anyways to level out the radiator. I ended up double stacking on the Drivers front. Did I miss something?

Go to NTB and get the 1, 3 or 5 year unlimited alignment package and then when you install the bumper get it realigned.

You got the spacers correct. I never doubled them up but I have seen the same thing you see. I am sure many guys miss that step and get a mystery clunk.

After we put on the lift and NTB did the alignment, the truck drives like it did factory. According to their tech, the alignment isn't square, but its out .02 on each side. The tech said as long as its out on both sides, a difference would not be noticed. I did, however, do the 5 year plan, because when I do put on UCAs or come back from a trip, it will cost nothing and two adjustments cost what the plan did.

i have the same problem i installed the support washers and eliminated the horrid sound it was causing but i still have a problem with my sway bar bumping it and making a popping sound. if you get underneath yours, or if you already noticed, the radiator is super solid without the supports (seems they would be unnecessary for the radiator) but they are what connect the skid plate and without them you can't install your skid plate correctly and the skid probably wouldn't have the integrity without them. thats just my observation.:keyboard:

Did you take measurements on the front? I picked up 2 1/4 driver and 3.1" passenger. 1" lean as they come from icon. Ordered the spanner wrench to crank up the driver and get it leveled. Rear also reads the same. Ride is really nice though. Not running the front sway bar.

so I staring at my truck today and noticed these. Anyone have the same issues? :sadwave:

The rear shock bushing looks squished.

I also noticed the rear endlink threw some grease up...im assuming this is bad.

I actually cranked the driver up about .5". The rears are much higher than I wanted/want. I am thinking about going with the Wheelers coils. The ride quality is exponentially better!

Suspension isn't rocket science, but in my mind it ain't as easy as a lot of folks make it sound.

My 2 cents, drive to High Tech and have them fix it. You will continue to putz around and if you're lucky, you'll get it fixed. If not, you will ruin your expensive suspension parts and still need to go to a qualified shop to get it fixed.

Suck up the pride and break out the check book. I drove from Indy to Chantilly to have them do the install right of the bat. Best decision ever.
