Icon lift need help picking rear shocks

I'm replacing my 5100 Bilstein on the non-lift setting with wheelers 2.5" lift springs on the front, JBA upper control arms, rear 5100 Bilstein, and wheelers 1.5" lift coils. I bought Icon extended coilovers 58647 for the front and icon rear 2" lift springs 52700. I was planning on running the rear Bilstein for a few months before replacing them.

I'm looking at icon rear shocks 2.0 Aluminum Series Remote Reservoir 56505R
or V.S. 2.5 Series RR Rear Shocks 57810P.

This is for my daily driver but looking to get into overlanding and have a few trips planned this year to offroad more. I need suggestions on which shock setup to go with. I will carry more weight for these trips and may get rooftop tent later on. There about a $450 difference in the two setups. But I want to run the shock that will complement the front coilovers the best.

if the $450 is no issue, i'd just get the 2.5" rears and call it a day.

If the lift is for looks, any cheap option works.

If you intend to use the shock properly (i.e. offroad) get the best you can afford... if you ever go rear steel bumper or constant heavy rear loads, definitely get the 2.5" body shocks

Even the 2.0 non resi are adequate in the rear (unless you run true LT up front and do high speed desert type driving)... but get what you like. They are probably the easiest part of the suspension to swap out.

ICON 2.5" shocks

I just installed the ICON V.S. 2.5 Series Remote Reservoir Rear Shocks, long travel on my 2015 T4R with KDSS. I also got the ICON 2" lift springs. The extra girth means more volume and less work by the shock (less heat), I believe. It's all part of an ICON tubular Stage 7 lift I installed in January.

Get the steel shin guards for these to keep the big rocks and gravel from pitting the shafts. I found rubber accordion style shock guards to fit the shock for added protection. It fits the top cylinder and tapers to a narrow opening at the bottom. Just a plastic wire tie at the top to keep it on. If I can keep the dirt and sand off of the shocks they may go longer without service.

The rubber boots are mandatory. I think ICON ships those with most of their shocks now, but not sure. Without them, the shaft will pit from gravel and sand constantly hitting at velocity. They don't need to be attached at the bottom (so water or whatever can just flow out).. just at the top. Been running like this for years without any issues at all. Shafts look perfect.

I wish somone would do a similar replaceable cover in the front coil overs as it would keep the seals lasting longer, but the front is not near as big of a deal since it is typically the leading edge and somewhat protected by the coil itself.

Hi wfo9,
No, the rubber boots are not included. I had to look for them on another site to find them. You have to ask/shop for a size of boot that fits the 2.5" shock cylinder. I forget who I bought them from, Off Road ... something.

I considered boots for the front shocks but it's harder to install them due to the coil over spring.

Thanks everyone for the reply

I'm going to be running the following setup! I can't wait to install it. I like that I can add to the system if needed but for my current needs, this should cover it for now. I want to get out off-road more and learn as much as I can. My biggest this is going to be keeping them clean. I know they will get dirty but I want them to last as long as possible before rebuilding them. I have waxed that hell out of everything before install and plan to wipe them down every so often in hopes of keeping them performing as best as possible. Thanks to everyone on the forums for helping decide what I needed.

Where did you get the accordion style shock guards? Thanks for pointing that out. In my research, I have overlooked that they do not come with them thanks!

I would get the Total Chaos upper control arms!

I had them for 4 years on my rig and no issues with them.

Which Icon Rear?

I have a similar setup: JBA, 2.5 Icon RR F&R (Both +1"), Icon +2" rear coils (actually came out to 3"). I bought mine because a vendor had a return package, and the price was great. It was what I wanted, and I'm glad I got it. I have an SSO bumper w/ winch, full steel skids and C4 sliders. No plans for a rear bumper.

I think either rear will work for you; so I agree, if you can swing the $450 and still buy something nice for the wife / gf; go for it...

I already have the JBA upper control arms.

I'm very happy with my JBA UCAs. They don't squeak or make funny noises and the sealed ball joints are easy to swap of you ever need to (I believe they are from GM trucks or something like that)

It all depends on what you want to do. For overlanding, you can't go wrong with any of your choices since its all overkill anyway.

However, buy what your heart wants, or you won't fully be happy.

Off Road Warehouse
(800)341-7757
Quantity: 2
Item: Rubber shock boot
Comment: For ICON 2.5" rear shocks, ID of boot must fit 2&1/2 inches

I can't find the part number or brand name, but you can call them to find out which boot fits a 2.5" ICON shock. I initially ordered a smaller shock boot and put the note copied above in the comments box - that it must fit the ICON 2.5" shock. They put the order on hold and wrote me back to offer an alternative that did fit. I called them and revised the order over the phone. They were very helpful.
