Icon Stage 2, OME BP-51, or King?

Hi All,

I currently have a 2015 Limited with TRD Pro's and stock sized BFG's. It's time to ditch the X-REAS. I'm debating between the Icon Stage 2 and the OME BP-51 kit. I know it's hard to compare a remote reservoir setup Vs. a standard setup but I can't justify the ICON Stage 7. The BP-51 is near the limit of what I'm willing to spend for a lift.

Coming from X-REAS I'm still wanting a somewhat nice/plush ride, not too harsh, as 90% of my driving is highway. Will be hitting trails here and there but nothing crazy. Really wanting to get that 3" of lift and level the rig out a bit and I do plan on getting a full Budbuilt or RCI skid setup. So there will be a little extra weight in the near future but no bumper plans. Should I look at a King setup instead? Of course I know I'll need UCAs which I plan on getting.

Don't yell at me too much saying to use the search engine because the BP-51 seems so new there isn't much info!

Any insight, recommendations, or comments would be greatly appreciated. I'm ready to pull the trigger just need to make up my mind. Leaning toward the ICON stage 2 but for some reason that BP-51 and King remote setup keep me searching but not sure if it's worth it.

Thanks in advance!

I wish those OME's had been out when I bought, probably would have tried it out. I'm happy with my setup, if I were buying today I'd be hard pressed to justify doing anything other than the same kit given cost and use. Kings look nice...

I'm running the bp51s. First impressions: rides as well as my full king remote resis on my Tacoma without any adjustment. Stick with the standard springs if you're not planning on putting to much weight in the back and you'll enjoy them

Because with kings you get king ride, King quality, Baja 1000 and Dakar winning pedigree, and adjustable dampening and rebound.

Lol. You sure are proud of your shocks. That's nice.

I could care less about allegiances to brands and have run Kings, Icons, and OME in the past. They're all a little different with little different problems in terms of wear and tear, but pretty much the same in the higher price point.

The only negative I see with the BPs is that they're fairly new and untested with the 4R, although they do share similar weights and geometry with the Prado... whose kit had been around a while.

How do the Kings adjust rebound? I haven't seen that done

So if your at 90% highway, occasional trails, want a lift, why not consider a simpler setup like spacers or bilstein 5100??
Just can't see how you could really NEED a KING or BP-51 for your use. Seems kinda overkill. Plus you could use the saved $$$ for some other goodies.

This isn't a bad suggestion. I ran a trail with some other local guys this past weekend, one of which was a stock 3rd gen. Did everything I did minus one sketchy creek crossing - made me have one of those "well, shit" moments. The 4Runner is extremely capable stock, and much of what you can conquer is dependent on the driver's skill.

I think in OP's case, it may be a matter of upgrading for now AND in the future vs just what his situation calls for present day.

IMO BP51 at least in concept are >>>>> everything else. Internal bypass allows for a much better dampening profile.

Fox and King do have IBP coilover bodies, but I haven't seen one setup for a 4runner yet. You can of course build your own. Fox's IBP shocks run about $3,000 per set, so you'd be around $6,000 for 4 of them plus springs. In comparison the BP51 starts to look like a bargain.

They are all good. ICONs work really nice both on and off road for a moderate rig, which is all most 5th gen's will ever be. The digressive dampening is just about ideal IMHO.

ARB is always good quality...worth considering for sure. King are suppose to be top notch, but seem like overkill.

You don't need anything with a remote resi... but adjustable dampening and rebound would be nice. That is the only reason to even consider such a high end shock. But again, you don't need it.

I've found shock discussion to be almost religion with people. I really don't care or take pride in what I run. I have different shocks on each of my trucks. I just go by what is adequate and how it drives. Icons feel really nice for what these trucks are mostly used for, but there could obviously be something better. I would feel differently if I was doing high speed desert racing or king of the hammers..... If you want that level though... Shocks should be one of the last considerations after you pick a long travel setup....

Bruh I have bilsteins.

Kings adjust rebound when you order them as internal bypass.

To me, I can't justify ripping out an upgraded XREAS and putting in anything but something a big step up. Spacers can cause the XREAS to risk leaking.

OK right now I'm leading toward just saying screw it and getting the KINGs. My good friend has a newer Land Cruiser and put Kings on there and he tried OME and ICON previously but said it was too rough. His Land Cruiser does drive amazing.

Should I get adjustable or not? Also any thoughts on springs for the back? Leaning toward the ICON 2" springs. Is there a better but comparable recommendation with around spring rate that matches King coilovers?

Ohh and thank you everyone for the insight and guidance here. Very much appreciated.

If he tried OME overland... yea they are rough.. but made to last without ever being rebuilt. It's a give and take kind of thing. The bp51 is completely different. Never heard of a single person with ICON describe them as rough. The only complaint (if any) is usually too soft. There is no perfect answer, they all have pros and cons. It' just that your friends experience sounds off to me.

Kings have tons of options so you can tweak them to exactly what you need plus their customer service is top tier! ARB makes great products but King is a specialized company and focuses on one thing and it shows though their winnings! If you want extended travel or long travel King can do what ever you want and then some they can build what ever you need vs an off the shelf set-up...

I put Kings on a week ago. I'm happy. I kept it simple. No UCAs, about a 2" lift to roughly level. I didn't do springs because I didn't want lift and I am not adding weight. Stock tire size as well. I have the clickers, turned all the way soft. It's hard to imagine them full hard (phrasing). My main goal was a better ride. I wanted the bumps to be eaten up more. So far so good, and I'm think it will only get better as they break in.

OK I should elaborate on the comment from my friend. Slow or fast OME was harsh. ICON was a little too rough until getting up to speed. King was plush at any speed. At faster speeds ICON and King are very similar. I guess I take it with a grain of salt. This is why I asked the experts here on the forums as they will have more experience and knowledge. Of course his comments were for a Land Cruiser which is a whole different ballgame but I imagine there is a sliver of truth in there.

For myself I was wondering this new BP51 kit how it behaved but as I mentioned I think I'm sold on King from his comments and everyone on the boards. Again thank you everyone for the feedback, this really helped me out.
