ID these springs/lift

We bought a '98 limited 4wd for my son back in Nov. This has been my first experience with 4Runners, so I'm learning as I go.

I think that the PO lifted the rear of this truck, but not the front. hwell: I got underneath and took a pic of the rear spring (attached here). It looks to me like someone added a spacer in the rear. Is that indeed what that is that you can see above the coil spring??

Additionally, I've read on here about the number of wraps, and color markings on coil springs that can ID them. What do the markings on that spring indicate? Is it a stock spring, or from another Toyota, or aftermarket? Can anyone tell me?

Of course my son wants to lift the front to level it out - I don't necessarily disagree. But I need to know what we're working with (existing rear) to know better what route to take up front..

Those look like they are 99 highlander coils, these are 1"taller than most stock springs. If the back is much higher than the front, the previous owner could have installed them. Some people use them for a mild lift. They make taller ones for the front also.

Doesn't look like a spacer. That spring bump stop is big and sits deep in that upper perch area.

Thanks for the info! After doing some more reading on the talls, it does indeed look like that's what those are. But, they don't add 3" of lift alone, do they? His truck has 3" more height measured at the rear fenders than the front.....

Definitely "99 talls" but it looks to me like you got a spacer in there by how much the coil is compressed and the huge slug between the top of the spring and the underside of the spring seat.

Thanks Mike. That's really what I was thinking too.... but like I said in my OP, I'm new to this and learning as I go.
