Idea for carrying extra fuel can

I want to carry a little extra fuel with me, but don't want to keep a Jerry can in the car, nor do I want to change the bumper or add a rack.

I thought of a way to carry a 2 gal container outside the vehicle. See if you can find any flaws in the logic:

Since the wheel is upside down from the intended design, attach the bracket on the inside of the wheel using either short wheel studs or lug bolts from an old VW

Can would be recessed within the spare tire. A simple twist and it would drop. A padlock can be installed at the bottom of the shaft to keep it secure (and from dropping unintentionally)

The company never got CARB certification, so officially the container cannot carry gasoline. It was always intended and constructed for that purpose, however.

Feedback is welcomed! Expensive, but what isn't?

Only concern would be it lacks CARB compliance, low capacity, and it being exposed on the rear of the vehicle in the event of an accident.

Would be nicer if they had it on the inside of the wheel better protected similar to AEVs solution for the wrangler. http://www.aev-conversions.com/shop/fuel-caddy

It would be inside the spare wheel fairly protected.

How would you hang the spare. It's currently held up by a chain hoist system that grabs the hub of the spare. This would block that.

I can't imagine the logic of carrying 2 gallons for a car that has a 23 gallon tank.

On decent roads I can go well over 400 miles on a tank full. Even when in the rough in 4 wheel low I can get close to 300 miles. That extra two gallons can go only another 30 miles perhaps. On really long off-road treks I carry 10 gallons = good for an extra 150 miles.

5 gallons is enough to limp back to a gas station, or 10 gallons if I carry two fuel cans. But it's sorta hard to get into too much trouble if you're aware of how much gas you have and how much you need.

Nah, that's not it. It's a security blanket. I often drive in fairly remote areas. There are long stretches with no towns/gas stations. An extra 2 gallons wouldn't get me far, but in an emergency - to the next gas station.

While I find the idea novel, I find it easier and more practical to carry a 2.5-gallon jerry can properly secured in the cargo area. Sure, you hear the liquid swishing as it moves, but it doesn't get much easier than that...

Deutsche Optik used to carry them with excellent filling nozzles.


And yes, I agree with you that having that little bit extra is a nice security blanket. The one time my parents ran out of gas wasn't because they weren't careful, but rather because we were utterly unable to find a single open gas station ANYWHERE. Granted, this was back in the 1970's, where 24-hour stations were a rarity, but the lesson stuck.
