Idea for extra slot in 3rd gen dash..?

I do to but I figure I will have four close at hand and still keep the others in the glove box. It will be nice to have four close at hand with out having to look fo CDs while driving at 60MPH. Eyes on the Road

I just think that it makes the wasted space look cleaner and gives it a purpose instead of a hole in the dash.

You could switch to an aftermarket radio that takes the full double din size. I think most double din units have a screen, and some have Nav capability as well. That would be the ultimate solution. I think there are some double din units that are just AM/FM CD players though.

A second idea is to add a DVD player. You could use this to feed a pair of headrest monitors.

As for low cost ways of filling the space, I have seen a unit that has pop out CD holders. You can also get a DIN sized pocket, that might hold a pair of sunglasses or som other small item.

Personnaly I wanted to build a 1-DIN module containing oldschool backlit VU meters to hook up to the stereo outputs of my CD player. I got the displays but then I kind of got sidetracked.

Whatever it is tha you put in there, make sure it is BACKLIT !

another idea i had was to cut a piece of plexiglass, spray it all black leaving clear lettering that said "TOYOTA" or something that would be backlit by a neon light that i would stick inside the tray and put the plexiglass over it.

I actually was reading this thread right after i had a cd player installed that as well left an empty cubby hole. i came across his idea with the glass and a neon and got to work. i went to lowe's and got an 8x10 piece of plexiglass cut to size of the space and i got about 5 out of that 8x10 sheet. Then i went to check out neon's. there not really cheap so i went to a bike store and bought a small bike reflector that was clear and lit up red when you press the button on the back. and it was small enough to just wedge it in the space and it stayed in there jsut fine. Also the reflector has like 7 modes(strobe, steady, steady flash, and other designs) so then i created a couple of designs since i had 5 pieces i could swap in and out. i did just the toyota symbol on one, a pretty cool tribal symbol on another and t4r symbol on another. it seems that the less clear space you have for light to shine through, the better it shows up. ex. dont leave alot of clear space, small designs in the middle such as the toyota symbol. Then i was going to cut velcro to stick it on with but oddly enough there is a lip that runs around the space and its perfect just to pop it in there and it stays perfectly. The reflectors are a great alternate to neons, you can also put more under your dash and anywhere else youd like and its cordless(i cant stand cords running to the ciggarette lighter and stuff) and suprise suprise, i did all of it for under $10, hope this helps, let me know and i get some pics if you want.

I might be just a few days late. This will actually be my first post ever in this forum. I thought I'd chime in to let you know that not all Toyotas come equipped with the double din radios like they do now. A few years back with the older models that had the normal double din openings that didn't need adaptors they had something else to fill in the slot for those cars that came from the factory with just a cassette player. Actually it was just a small pocket that goes below the unit. I installed one of these when I took out my single cd player and cassete unit from my runner.

You can see the pocket in the auction there. You should be able to find it for about 10 bucks or less. You can find it at Crutchfield or on ebay. Just a thought for what you could fill the din hole with.

Thats what my suggestion is. Buy one of those pockets that would mount directly under the radio. I was just using that ebay auction to show what it was. It is a cubby hole. You can get it from Toyota or from any place that has car audio install equipment since they are also used for other imports like Nissan and such.

Well I haven't seen that before, you could possibly make the door yourself or buy both cubby holes, where one fits the toyota, and the one with the door. Then you could try to fit the door onto the toyota cubby hole. You know what I mean?
