Ideas on '88 4Runner purchase

I notice most of the post are on new 4Runners, so I hope this isn't out of place.

I'm looking to purcahse my first 4Runner and was looking at a '88 or '89 to piddle around with. I "really" like the looks of this model year. I was hoping to hunt down a 2wd, 6cyl model. Any thoughts on what I should look for or look out for?

Thanks

btw - I've been to the toyota-automotive-store.com web site and saw where I could get a new engine for $2,618 that gives $800 in labor and a 7 year/70,000 warranty... which is pretty nice. Wouldn't have much invested and have a pretty good warranty on the engine (of course, this is only the long block).

Got to look at a '90 2.4cyl 4Runner and I really liked it... it has 4 doors (but the top doesn't come off). Would a 2.4cyl have enough power to pull a small travel trailer (I live in Arizona where it get's 123 deg) or should I stick with a 6cyl for the added power?

and if I get a 4wd, what sort of maintenance are we talking about compared to 2wd?

Thanks
