Identify This Piece

Sorry for the noob question, but I’m taking apart the interior to install a new carpet kit when I came across this on the passenger side rear quarter panel. What is this? Has anyone seen it? It’s seems to be held onto the sheet metal with very strong glue of some sort. My rear quarter panels doesn’t look like it’s been bondo’d, so I don’t think it’s used to patch a hole in the sheet metal.

I want to make sure this is factory, and not some shady way of fixing a mystery problem.

Pretty sure it’s factory as mine has the same thing. If I were to guess it’s some kind of sound deadening.

My guess is that it is a dampening material to keep the inner molding of the cubby storage compartment from rubbing against body.

+1. It makes the quarter panel go thunk thunk thunk instead of tink tink tink when you tap on it.

A little of that goes a long way to making a car sound and feel less 'tinny'.

Thanks all for confirming that it’s factory. There were some questionable finds in this truck when I ripped out the cargo area carpet. Shards of glass, but doesn’t appear to be from the truck window/windshield, as the shards are not transparent. PO also hastily put thenpanel back after what I can only imagine as using his attempt to tidy up speakers wires. The install of the aftermarket HU was janky at best.

Yeah. I think it's pretty standard. This one is on my 2002.
