Old thread, hate to bump but this info really came in handy. The door lock latch fell off mine and I hate leaving it unlocked. The youtube video posted above also had some good info:

Did not try this, but the modular part with the 2 links for the handle and lock pops off so you can keep the ball things intact with the assemblies. That's what the video seems to indicate anyway. Also you can remove the bulb wire harness by popping off the lens, the other ones you can also remove with the door partially separated.

Invaluable! My door check was hyperextended and bent. It caused the glass to scrape against the metal corner when I rolled the window down (not what you want to hear in your 'new' 08). Got a new one on order, but getting to it was fun. This helped a lot! FYI, a bent door stop cannot be straightened with a hammer. It just stops working entirely.

I know this is old but... i broke the white plastic piece too... I found the part i need but did you replace the cable that broke or did you leave it as it was? The door still locks and unlocks as well as opens and closes no issue. Its just the indicator piece that does not turn all the way showing the door is unlocked.
Were you able to replace the whole cable easily? or is it a pain to connect it to the other end inside the door?

Thanks for writing this up.
My driver side window had been making a popping noise the last 1000 miles and I didn't know where it was coming from. Ultimately turned out to be a concern for the door check. Followed these instructions and a video on YouTube (Sequoia door check) and got it out. Attached is what it looks like. +1 to those who say it can't be bent back. I tried with a hammer and work bench vice. No luck. It got mangled. $85 later a new one arrived from Amazon prime. Save your time and sweat and get a new one. Have 100k on my 2007 4runner so here's to 100k more when I would need to do this repair again. Also there are some posts saying this bent check would not damage the window. I'm not so sure about this. Whether it's the glass itself or the mechanism, I bet these bent door checks cause damage over the long term. Also glad someone priced out the repair from the dealer, nearly $500 saved after taxes. $85 dont sound so bad after all. Cheers from NC.
** May be hard to see, but this is bent pretty bad to the left. You are looking straight on to the door check as it would have sat in the drivers side door. The end towards us is bent left and interfering with the window operation.**

2003 inside drivers door opening lever
My lever has lost its spring back and I'm not sure what part to order to change it. Does anyone know where to buy it. Is there a spring in there to replace or an entire assembly to swap it. It's somehow connected to the locking function. I've seen excellent tips on removing the panel but I would like the parts at hand before I start with that. Please let me know what and where to order. Thanks.
