Idle control valve replacement cost

Bought a 4runner this past week. sometimes dies on startup. owner said this happens every now and then. took it in today to have it checked and they want $750 for idle control valve or whatever its called along with a carbon cleaning. is this standard for this price? I opted not to have it fixed since it's not dying at lights or anything, and giving it a little gas seems to do the trick.

yikes! also said struts (front and back) are worn. shocks, tie rod, rack and pinion bushings, sway bar end link could in the future use replacing. wonder why the inspection previous didn't catch this. jesus! all this at 90k? normal I guess??

anyways, any thoughts on the idle issue? normal price? this was not a dealership. thanks!

nope, independent auto shop I found on yelp.

Way too expensive unless it includes all parts and the the suspension is included. I would do some serious research and get a few quotes from a trusted mechanic.

yeah 750 was just for the air intake issue + carbon cleaning. nothing else.

Ok, just making sure. I was reading about some serious fraud going on at a few Firestone's in your area.

That price (I assume for labor also) is outrageous. The part is $200 OEM (from Camelback Toyota) Would take maybe 30 minutes to put in although book rate is probably near 2 hrs. The Carbon cleaning is probably unnecessary.

Our trucks don't have struts. Coilovers in the front. springs and shocks in the rear.

90K?? My truck had 170k with the original rear shocks and springs.

Your being up sold big time.

I had this thing inspected before I bought it from an old time shop out in the desert, seemed like good honest guys the first round. this place, despite the ratings on yelp, found a laundry list of things that "may need replacing." ending up costing thousands. shit! I will keep driving it with this issue until I find a shop who can replace it for less.

as for yours having 170k with original rear shocks and springs... yes. that's what I'd expect mine to last to! good to hear.

Mine had 351,000 on original front and rear when I got it.

You could put an IAC in. The hardest thing is getting the little coolant hoses off and on.

All those repairs could be done by you if you are physically able to get under your truck. Nothing in that list is difficult aside from the rack bushings being a bit of a pain in the ass. You could save a lot of cash even if you have to buy all your tools.

He might be right, I don't know, I was just saying that mine were original at 350k but the rears were shot.

Yours may have been used hard and died early.

What year? The IAC valve is very different on the throttle-by-wire systems in '01 and '02'. Need to change the whole throttle body. But for an earlier year that is highway robbery.

You can get an OEM IAC valve on Amazon for $206. At a dealer, list is $271.49. Add in a TB gasket another $10. It would take me max 20 minutes to swap that thing. Even calling it $100 in labor to allow for diagnostic, he's charging twice what the job is worth.

Definitely try that first. I was just evaluating the price of a new one. Most times it can be saved.

you say you could swap this in 20 min.... is this something anybody can do? any tips? I'm more than willing to work on it myself rather than paying somebody. just got off the phone with another auto shop, they want 160 for labor, and $380 for the part. insane price if you say the dealer wants 279.

It's pretty simple. Search 'IAC valve' on here and you'll find lots of how-to's on cleaning and replacing. No need for me to add anything.
