idle fluctuating

i have an 88 3.0 the idle when started is high and when i drive it and warm it up the idle will fluctuate from about 1200 to 2000.i can pat the accelerator and it will smooth out at 1100 or 1200.anybody help?
up and down and up and down!

How's the coolant level?

coolant is good,today the idle started staying really high until i patted the accelerator. How is the idle high when the adjustment screw on the outside is not touching the throttle.(i really miss carburetors)

I have had the throttle cable hang up on the throttle cam when the cable hold down bracket got bent it wouldn't do it all the time
