My issue as well. In my opinion Wranglers have priced themselves out of me caring about them. When I bought the 4runner in 2019 I though carefully about jeep, on paper they have exactly what I want, manual transmission, dual lockers, very nice low range, (4:1), manual transfer case, and you can even get manual windows and locks, but at 50k, I could buy my TRD OR and build it where I wanted and still have money in the bank. I cared more about jeeps when you could by a JK rubi for less than 30k

In that order. I'm probably going to have a Tundra or LX570 in the driveway as soon. I just need something that can tow better. My F250 isn't the answer I was hoping (because of reliability - or lack of...) Hoping to keep the 4R too, but not sure. Hard to justify the 4R, FJ40, and an LX570 to my wife. Easy for me to justify for myself... haha.
A 5.7 v8 4Runner or TTv6 with AHC from the LX would be my dream setup. The LX is really hamstrung offroad by the weight. They're just so heavy, it really hurts the performance. But the power and suspension does a great job of highway and dirt capability. So it's a mixed bag. The GX v8 is great, but not really a good towing engine being short stroke wide bore. The 5.7 is basically the same engine with a longer stroke. I'm kinda surprised we haven't seen 5.7 swaps into the GX.

I bought my 2006 Rubicon for $28K. I just built a basic 2 door Rubicon for $50K. It only has two F'n doors. No way will I ever pay that much for a Jeep. Keeping the Pro for as long as I can.
If Subaru comes up with a new engine that does NOT burn oil, I might give then a second look. At least here in the US, Subaru engines are horrible.
I had MAJOR issues with oil consumption on a NEW 2018 Forester, dealer insisted 1quart per 1000miles is normal, etc.
So I traded in my Forester for the 4Runner and lost $5000 in the process because i refused to have car drama in my life.
So no, for me at least, Subaru doesn't exist ....
Lullz. I had an STI that blew the ringlands on 2 pistons on the way to the dealer for its FIRST oil change.. it was always cylinder 2 and 4. It did this 2 more times before I said screw this, and sold it for an Evo X haha.
The old 2.0l engines were mint... the newer 2.5l are horrible. I have no experience with the new 2.0l though.

I had a 2011 Forester with the NA 2.5 that drank oil. It was in it's quart-per-1,000 mile test to see if it qualified for a replacement of the short block when I said screw it and traded it on a 2016 WRX with the 2.0 turbo. It doesn't burn a drop of oil and has been rock-solid reliable. Fun as hell to drive and can get 35mpg on the highway. If it was only a hatchback it would be pretty much perfect.
I still own my first Subie, a 1998 Legacy 2.2, that my son now drives. That car has been the very definition of trouble-free for 23 years now. My daughter drives a 2008 Impreza 2.5 that has made a couple of Florida-Oregon road trips and hasn't given her any significant issues in 5 years.
Ok, enough off topic, just needed to defend Subaru a little bit. They can have their issues, but can't really be beat for an affordable snow-car here in the mountains.

Hey our '16 JKUR has been great so far!! (...knocks on wood) Fewer issues than the 4Runner, actually, since the front power window motors both needed replaced. Then again... this is the only vehicle I considered and purchased a lifetime powertrain/electrical/AC warranty for. lol Just in case!

I do feel they have some issues to fix in current years, but I've always had great luck with them. I had a 16 JKU, grand cherokees, cherokees, etc. before my T4R. All my Jeeps were reasonably great. Some 200k+ miles, built well, and were used pretty hard offroad. I really wanted to just try something new or I would have a JLU.

I miss solid front axle wheeling. If you could buy a new 70 Series Troopy here in USA that would be my top choice. For another new vehicle JLU Rubicon with Ursa Minor top

Probably a Tacoma. I had a 2001 Taco that I really liked prior to my 4Runner.
This is a much more interesting discussion than I would have thought and I'm itching to ask the first question:
- WHY not any love for Jeep Grand Cherokee? Yes very buggy in the past, and I recommended to my own two sons not to EVEN consider, .... until I accidentally rented a 2020 one and drove it 1600 miles in a week. I am OCD about reading up on auto reliability [which is at a historically bad point in the last 7 years or so, including Toyota]. 2018 to present are looking to be historically Good years for JGC. and generally the better dealers get good marks for repairs, and the MOPAR warranty gets very high marks compared to others though they dropped the most popular 'lifetime' contracts.
- I had GX460 on my list.... until I actually drove one, and I drove it on all kinds of roads. Struck off my list. GX470 is far better in my view unless you're just enamored with the later tech of the 460. To me, Toyota has not improved their score with the later V8's. Both are buggy but due to pride, one has to read a lot to uncover what's going on there. The prior gen V8's were acceptably good, not as good as the legendary 4.0L
- I would buy a clean GX470 over anything in the above list - if I could sprint fast enough to catch. Years ago had several golden opportunities but they are scarce and high priced in this area now. GX470 is far more well-screwed-together than the new GX and has superior seats for long haul. New GX seat is a killer for me. bad as T4R seats are, they're better. JGC is better than either re seats - especially the front passenger seat
- Why not Sequoia if you're fan of Toyota modern V8's? Because it is too blasted huge to be of much use offroad. But very popular and sought after, and limited production. I have one for sale if anyone would like.... 2013
