If 4Runners didn't exist ....

Tacoma, easily. But 4Runners and Tacomas both exist, and I chose a 4Runner. Would do it again without a moment's hesitation. The V8 on the GX is tempting, but it would require extensive mods, and at a certain point, the cost may not be worth it for me.

They never would have stopped making the Bronco II.
 
Land cruiser 70, 100 or 200 series or a Lexus GX 460 in that order. But then again we would not be having this topic of conversation if we could get the 70 series Land cruiser in the US.
 
LC200....but I think the Nissan Armada is a very interesting option (its the Nissan Patrol without the lockers). There is just no 4x4 aftermarket support for it in the US. Wish the GX460 didn't run on premium or else that.

If I didn't tow a camper or use a 3rd row I would definitely put my vote in for the new Bronco after the 1st year or two.

I loved my X-terra. Had a 2006 and put 120,000 trouble free miles on it before getting the 4runner. It's was essentially a smaller more utilitarian 4runner. It also had the smoothest 6speed manual transmission I've ever driven in a 4x4.
 
Too many choices and I'm not brand-loyal. I buy what suits me at the time.

So my choices would be (in no particular order):

Xterra
JKU
Gladiator
Chevy Colorado ZR2
Lexus GX 460/470



Can't fit into Tacoma, so that's out.

70 series would be my forever car if we got them as well!

barring that for the money, (and no other Toyotas), I would be hard pressed to not look at a new zr2, (with bison front bumper added), (would personally get the short cab with six foot bed). With dual lockers, proper wheels/tires, rock rails, skid plates, and decent suspension all from the factory, I would buy one, add a winch to the bumper that's already set up for it, and be done.

When I bought in 2019 it was very tempting because they were selling for about 5 grand more than I paid for the 4runner but I had to sink a little over 10 grand in the 4runner to have it set up like I wanted whereas the zr2 would have only required a winch. It was a steep price to pay for "Toyota reliability", Still think I made the right choice.

Would also consider Wrangler/gladiator
 
Land Rover Discovery, even the new ones. Yes, they require regularly scheduled maintenance, but, despite their reputation, never have had one let me or anyone I have known down.

My current Disco (2017) is more off-road capable than my 2020 TRD ORP, and it is A LOT better to drive on the road.
 
I would and almost bought another Xterra. I really liked my 2012. I'm sure they are close to the 4 Runner in reliability. I thought I found one when I was offered $54K for my Pro. The Xterra had only 38K miles, but they wanted $21,500 and I couldn't justify buying a 10 year old vehicle that would need $10K in mods. The crappy access for my dog was a big factor and the 4R rear window. The overall difference would be about $20K so I decided to keep my 4R and try to pay it off early. The 4R is my favorite vehicle I've ever had and its perfect for me and my dog. Gonna take me a long time, but I love it and want to keep it.

I don't think I will ever own another Rubicon. Way too expensive now. Plus they are a horrible long distance vehicle.
 
FJ70 or FJ80 Land Cruiser. Might also consider a Taco for newer alternative.

Went from FJ80 to Jeep JKU prior to 4Runner. Appreciate the drivability, utility and engineering differences over the JK.
 
I probably would've continued on with F150 FX4s (my last was a 2013 w/ 5.0L) until I saw how the new Bronco panned out.

I actually bought my '19 ORP because I was tired of blown deadlines on the Bronco (here we are almost 2yrs later and they're still not on the road). Now that I've had and driven the 4Runner for a while, I've got no interest in swapping to anything else.
