Why - when my phone is Bluetooth'd to my 4R and I'm simultaneously using GoogleMaps and having a hands-free telephone conversation - can the person on the other end of the call not hear the GoogleMaps voice when she interrupts with updated directions?

For this resourceful group, I'm serious with the question.

Someone on the other line can plainly hear ambient noises inside/outside the vehicle when on a call and the GoogleMaps lady is audibly loud and clear in my cabin when she tells me to stay in the left lane....

Is this particular to Toyotas?
 
Generate a constant noise while in the cab, however you like, but make sure that it is not controlled by the vehicle's speakers otherwise this will not work. Now with that noise running constantly, perform your bluetooth phone call/satnav function simultaneously. If, when you are receiving driving instructions the other person hears a break in the constant noise, the satellite navigation probably has turned off the mic function for the duration of its instruction and then turned it back on after it is done. (since it does the same thing to the music this is probably the case) the person on the other end probably just doesn't normally notice the break in sound because the ambient noises aren't that loud and normally people aren't talking while they are receiving driving instructions.

If however, they do not hear a break in the noise, then i suspect magic and or Kid's explanation
 
I'm guessing that it's the same way that the voice prompts mute the radio, it also mutes the audio being sent to the phone.
 
That should be an easy test to perform. I'll report back, if it appears anyone's interested.

I thought this was well known but maybe not, Google voice/maps emits its sound at 3.14259gHz which can be picked up by the human ear but not most microphones so while you can hear it the cell phone/4runner speaker will not pick it up.

I heard that Google labs is also working on video projects that will use wavelength just outside the normal visible spectrum that you can use special contact lenses to view and without it no one else can see it. Its for people who like tow watch dirty movies in public

Not had a moment to check this out yet. No doubt I quit talking when "alien-Google-lady-without-the-British/Australian-accent" speaks, so that theory may prove the solution.

I've frequently asked the other phone party, "Did you hear that?" and clearly they have zero idea what I'm referencing.
 
Most modern phone mics (and extensions thereof) are human voice activated. If you talk to someone using bluetooth in their car with the window down, notice that you can't hear the traffic in the background unless they're talking. You may have to try this while talking to a guy..........for obvious reasons. :blabla:

From one engineer to another: that frequency looks familiar...I think of corn bread when I tune to that frequency.

Not particular to Toyotas. Same happens in my wife's Outback and my Prius (ok, that's a Toyota too)
