Up until this point, the majority of Fedor's opponents were strikers. But Werdum's brazilian ju-jitsu is one of the best in the heavyweight division. In addition to this, Fedor over-committed with trying to ground-and-pound and didn't realize that Werdum wasn't seriously hurt when he went to the ground. As a result of this over-commitment, he left his upper body exposed in Werdum's open guard and gave him enough wiggle room to slap on that triangle.
I think Fedor had a better chance of winning the bout by having Werdum get back up and making it a stand-up bout.
My theory is Werdum faked the impact of that punch an went down on purpose to lure Fedor into his guard. Fedor has a habit of pouncing on a downed fighter and finishing them with strikes. This time he over estimated Werdum's ability. But remember Werdum was finished in one round by Junior dos Santos in his last UFC fight in 08.
If you watch the interviews, documentaries, etc. about Fedor and his camp, you'll see his goal WAS to be undefeated. His first loss was a referee stoppage because of stupid cut, so really his goal was to retire with only 1 loss lol. In terms of luring other fighters away from the UFC to fight Fedor, there's only a handful that would want to do that. M1 Global, Fedor's promotion, is mainly based in Japan and does co-promotions with Strikeforce and I don't think a lot of UFC fighters want to fight in Japan and/or fight with a "lower" promotion like Strikeforce. The only real BIG name that has wanted to fight Fedor was Randy Couture. Even Brock hasn't shown too much interest in wanting to fight Fedor, mainly because he wants to fight all the top heavyweights in the UFC.
That is Fedor's second loss along with one "No Contest" There are a lot of people that say Fedor fights "Nobody" opponents. I say Bullshit! I have followed Fedor for awhile and I can say he is one of the best full contact fighter of all time. He is a killer and has that instilled in him.
If you really want to see what he is made of watch the the Fedor vs Randleman.
Randelman throws a suplex on Fedor that would break your neck and Fedors still comes back with an arm bar on Randleman that makes Randleman tap out.

Interesting thoughts, but nothing I havent heard about Fedor yet.
I am one that believes that he fights nobody opponents, he hasnt fought a high quality opponent since 2005,
Werdum might have been cut from the UFC a little prematurely, but obviously, there is no way he would win the title from Lesnar let alone beat Carwin or Velasquez.
and theres no reason now to see Fedor get his butt kicked by any of those guys, He will prob win a rematch against Werdum, and could prob beat Overeem but I dont see him beating any of the top contenders in the UFC right now.
He WAS one of the best heavyweights ever if not the best heavyweight to date, but I think hes past his prime and should win a few more fights then retire with his legacy intact.

You want the publicity and acknowledgement from the general MMA fan you gotta fight in the UFC or people just don't pay attention.
On the other hand UFC 116's co headline Chris Leben/Yoshihiro Akiyama was a solid fight and the Lesnar/Carwin was better than I expected and Lesnar took a beating and withstood punch after punch and unfortunatly exposed Carwin who didn't seem to train for anything past the 1st round. I think UFC's pay-per-view numbers also went past the 1 mil mark pretty easily but I haven't found actual numbers.

Nice! that would have been a good one, how was the view? I had a friend sit in the first few rows at the Machida vs. Evans fight and said that the cage and the cameramen and everyone got in the way of the view and he would rather sit higher or watch it from home,
what were your thoughts?

I was actually in a great spot, but if I were a few rows closer I don't think I would have seen any of it because of the cameras and media people. Any farther back and TV would be better. I think I was in row 18 or so. A few of my buddies had nosebleed seats and they said never again, not worth the $40 ticket. I think my ticket was ~$100 and was way worth it!

I also believe Fedor is past his prime but he is great to watch and keeps people busy with all the "What If."
