I'm about to get mine professionally repainted because the midnight black with purple glitter is getting on my nerves. Thanks Uncle Sam! It won't cover the whole price but it's a chunk out of it for sure.

I love the Nautical Blue and wouldn't change it but I sure would like thicker/harder clear coat! See if you can get it painted something close to Nautical, it looks amazing when the sun hits it.

I’d repaint the same color. A full color change is soooooo expensive to do correctly. You’re talking body off frame and striped to a shell to to have it not look like a half assed piece of shit. When it comes paint, do it right, or just do a wrap on the exterior.

I had a shop paint my 2005 4R. The clear coat on the fenders, roof, part of the hood, and rear spoiler had faded and it was on my list for a long while. I got rear ended in 2019 and decided to pull the trigger. I had it repainted the same color. Silver Metallic. It looks new now and love it. I'll keep it for a minimum of 20 years. 16 years stronger together so far

But starting from scratch, I would pick quicksand. Or a light sage green like in the new military camo. Using duracoat. Hard AF and low gloss.

I would Line-X the hood in a color that doesn't clash with the existing Magnetic Gray - perhaps military olive or flat black - mostly to cut sun glare - and leave the rest to get pin-striped on the trails.

I like mine the color it is, i.e. completely murdered out, but...I sure as hell wish Toyota's paint was better quality. You can scratch it down to the primer with an eyelash. Mine is pinstriped to hell. If it gets bad enough and I get really bored and suddenly become rich, I might paint it that national forest service truck mint/cyan green color. If I could pick a standard 4runner color, I'd probably pick quicksand.

Just get a metallic or pearl version of them if you like it. I've always been a fan of World Rally Blue on the Subarus and Jetstream Blue on the Corvettes.

I would get Nardo Grey with a black roof like the TRD Camry. Maybe in Satin. But gloss looks good also.

Cement is still my favorite OEM color though.

Wrap

I’m a huge fan of the cement color, if I could pick any.

But why not do a wrap? Will help protect the existing paint job, you can pick any color (or design) you want, and can be removed whenever you sell. Would also help with the fact that unless you remove everything to do the repaint the right way, your car will always be two toned and any future buyer will think something nefarious went on with the repaint.

I’m preferential to this one in particular...

How about a metallic olive green, like the Dodge Dakota came in back in the '90's? Or a metallic forest green? Always thought it was a mistake to get rid of the forest green like they offered on the 4Runner years back. The right shade of yellow would be a nice change of pace. Toyota makes a great vehicle, but they are way to conservative on their color shades. Purple anyone?
And yeah. You're right. It does need a paint everywhere, under the hood, in the door frames etc. treatment to do it right. But you don't have to strip it to bare metal. Not that it would take that much with the Toyota paint. But just to the factory primer. Gonna have to win the lotto or something to do it right.

I’m partial to my silver color. Dust and pinstripes don’t show up on it so much. And the light color is cooler in the sun. My first 4R had that black top and it was hot AF if the A/C wasn’t always on.

BTW, did you get an estimate for the cost? I was considering getting my wife’s small car done at a high quality pro shop. That would cost $5,000. I imagine a 4Runner would be more.

Like others - I would highly recommend you do not do a repaint color change. To do one properly you are talking significant money. The entire car must be stripped or it's just going to look like crap.

Look into doing a wrap. I'm in the middle of doing one right now, brand new '21 4Runner went straight for a full color wrap. Going to rock Avery Satin Stunning Orange for a bit.

Considerably less than a full repaint and you can change it up any time you want.

You only repaint the OEM color, everything else will look like crap unless they completely disassemble the body and paint every panel.

Which they won’t do.

And your truck will look like it was stolen and resprayed.

All panels off, door cards and glass out, carpet out.... lol, there goes $20k. Or shoot the outside for $2k and have it look like total shit every time you open the door or hood. Oh and good luck with re sale, ever. Wrap or plasti dip if it bothers you that much.
