The VW Atlas is nice. The vr6 is a solid engine (vw originally designed it as a diesel engine). It's also probably the safest thing you can buy. VW reliability though? Used F150/Raptors are pretty affordable. The Ford Edge ST does 0-60 in 6 seconds. The Acura MDX hybrid is just as fast. I'm assuming you want a 3 row vehicle with some awd capability....Toyota Sienna Awd will probably take you pretty much anywhere. People like to compare Jeep Wranglers to 4runners, but imo there is no comparison. The Jeep is an offroad vehicle and the 4runner is an overlanding vehicle.

My wife traded her '04 V6 4Runner Limited for a '16 AWD Hilander Limited, and she regrets the decision. She wishes she had gone with the 4Runner. She says it is sluggish when trying to pass cars. I'm annoyed by the new non-replaceable chrome-plastic wheel covers that stick out past the tires, but I guess everybody is doing that now.

Buddy of mine works at a VW,Mazda and Volvo dealership....the Tiquan and Atlas, just like every other VW, I wouldnt touch with a 10ft pole. Those things come in with so many problems its silly.

Also, carquestion on youtube does some diagonal tests of those awd minivan/crossover things. The results were not very suprising, but really does show how inadequate some awd systems are. The performance of the Highlander is very disappointing.

I really like the look of the Mazda cx9. They really up their design game the past few years. My wife has had 2 Mazdas, they were underpowered imo, but they were reliable.

I'd love an older range rover or discovery honestly. I loved my 01 disco2, it was a beast, but I was constantly worried a $1000+ repair was around the corner. If they had toyota reliability I never would've sold it.

Realistically, I dream of a fully restored and modestly modified fj60 or 80. Something I could drive every day if I wanted to.
