Igniter Thread

Hi I am new to this fourm and to automotive world. I recently purchased a 88 4 runner that seems to be in great shape. Body has no holes good tires and good top. The problem is it does not have any spark. Its the 6 cyl model. Now im a small engine guy and know almost nothing about cars and trucks. We removed the dist cap and noticed the pin was missing from the cap so this would allow it not to spark. Replaced it with still no fire. I was told to check the igniter. My neighbour checked it some how and said it had sparatic
readings. So calling around with no lead on the igniter I needed I bought some other ones for 25$. One looks the same but plugs right into the igniter and has one more wire. I have rewired atvs by bypassing certain wires and was wondering if anyone tried this?
Thanks for your time.

I had a similar problem, i think, and did have to rewire the ignition module. Does your ignition module have the green connector?

Yes mine does have the green plug. Im trying to convert one that plugs right into the igniter. I noticed on the other igniter that is has the same colored wires except there is another black wire. Now I checked and the black wire goes to such things as the tach and such. So could this other wire be for another option?

If you have an ohmmeter, check the resistance from one black wire to the other (with everything unplugged), if the resistance is 1 ohm or less, it's just a second wire for the same signal and you could ignore it.

Really? I have heard of these going on the runners. And something like this was holding me back from buying a used one from the same year. I really hope this works. And I can't thank you enough.
