Ignition Cylinder and Key replacement

Any ever do this? Is it super difficult? I have to replace mine because my key sometimes won't turn and other times won't come out. I mean the old girl only has 316k miles on her, how could this wear out? Haha! I bought a replacement for $95 bucks and now I'll have to fool with two separate keys for doors and ignition. Any help, tricks or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks y'all.

Most of the time the ignition cylinder is fine. Have the dealer cut a new key per the vin as the key itself is often so worn that it sticks.

I did mine a couple years ago for the same reason, new dealer cut key didnt help. Read the tumblers in the cylinder break, a locksmith can fix but a new ignition cylinder was cheaper. You need to remove the plastic surround around the ignition, put the key in and turn to the first or accessory position (can't remember), push in a little button on the cylinder and it should pull out, key and all. Do the same in the reverse order with the new cylinder and you're back in business. Using two keys can be a pain but I use my key fob to unlock and one key for ignition, but have a hide-a-key hidden in case my key fob dies and need the door key.

When you get a new ignition cylinder, it should come with a new set of keys, and you'll be carrying 2 keys.
Most want to eliminate that so, they just have a locksmith rekey the new cylinder to the old key.

I have to do the same. Apparently, having an 88’s keys replaced after losing them is a major pain in the you know what. The key code is obsolete as far as the dealership is concerned and I currently don’t have a key to pop off the ignition cylinder either. So I appreciate your question.

IF you have a title or can legally prove you own the vehicle. Most dealerships can cut you a new key off the build sheet key code off the vehicle. If the local dealer refuse to help contact larger one. Now if your original cylinder has been replaced and nobody knows the keycode. I guess a locksmith is the next route.

I just swapped my wifes assembly. Took me 20 minutes. Generally easy fix. Although, I've now come across a new issue and wondering if anyone has experiences md or fixed this. The pedal now has a delay in acceleration and isn't acting right. If I manually feather the throttle it revs right up. Unfortunately I can't drive it that way. Any suggestions?

do it now while you can still turn the key to Accessories position and push button and whole cylinder comes out and put in new one....should be easy..

mine wouldn't turn to accessories position and I had it drill it out and put in new one....bought one off AutoZone and done...wasn't that hard to do..

yes...its little hassle having 2 keys but other poster said...use keyless button to open and one to turn ignition... but it was cheap option then calling locksmith or dealers...DIY project.

Now I have to fix the door lock actuator motors which are worn out...since these door lock motors wear out eventually....Timmy the toolman has lots of youtube on this...and other matters....mine has 295k miles but still running good...

That sounds like another issue brewing. 2001 and 2002 have motorized throttle. May want to see if cleaning it will help as your stepper motor maybe having issues. Can happen..:-(
