Ignition key LED ring wiring question

Alright guys I’ve searched and searched and can’t find what I’m looking for. Long story short I’m wiring up some rock lights to come on when I unlock the 4Runner as well as be used by a switch. Can’t do it from the dome light fuse or relay because it stays hot soooooo the LED ring around the ignition key works how I want it. Comes on with unlock, goes off with ignition and lock.

Which leads me to my question. I cannot find a wiring diagram that tells me which wire in the harness I need to tap into in order for my relay to get power when the LED ring is triggered to come on.

I have heard some folks will use this wire for footwell lights as well as the map light mod but I’m having no luck finding what I need.

Thanks in advanced!

The interior light schematic is on my Footwell page and shows the ignition key cylinder light. I can confirm that the pins, connectors and wire colors shown on that 2007 diagram are the same for 2005.

Thanks man! So instead of tapping into the actual key ring wire harness you went to the ILE circuit. How necessary was it for you to also tap into the dome relay for the 30 minute shut off?

So basically all I want is when I press unlock, rock lights come on, when I crank 4R or lock it, the lights go off. I’ve got the rest of the wiring figured out, I’m just struggling to find which wire to tap into that will work this way. Im a wiring noob so I’d like to do this once before I tap into the wrong wire and have a rewiring headache on my hands.

I’m assuming that ILE circuit is directly tied to the LED key ring? If so, this appears to be the way to go because it functions exactly how I want my rock lights to.

Correct, direct from ILE on the back of the driver side interior relay/junction box. While not necessary to tap into the dome relay specifically, you have to get 12V+ from somewhere so why not just get it there too.

Yes the key ring directly uses ILE. You can see on the diagram the r-g wire goes back to the Body ECU ILE, while the solid red wire goes back to the Dome Relay for 12V+

Not to complicate things, and i dont have personal experience trying this, but if you can find the exterior connector for the optional lighted side steps (running boards), you can run your rock lights off that circuit and may be able to do all wiring from the underside of the vehicle without going to the interior junction box.

Yeah I’m going to look into that also. I have an SR5 and it’s not on the underside of the body. I’ve heard some folks say that SR5s didn’t come with that option and I’ve heard some say it’s just under the driver seat. So I’m going to start there and if that’s not an option I’ll go the ILE route.

Thanks for all the info man, and thank you for taking the time to write such in depth write ups. It’s freaking sweet and very well done!

Probably 2 years late but you can wire them to your side marker lights, thay way they turn off when the car is off and can turn it on and off when you feel like it thru the off-on-headlights switch
