Ignition Locked? Please help!

Hey guys,

2006 4Runner SE

This morning, I decided to pass on taking the train and drive into work. I walk out to my car; put my key in the ignition and the first thing I notice is that it

I'm sure it's not the 4WD; as mentioned in other threads, the 4Runner's 4WD system can be used any time, even on dry pavement. Even if it was an older style 4WD, the 4WD system has nothing to do with the ignition.

Sounds like a basic mechanical problem with the key cylinder. I don't think there are any safety gadgets that would prevent the key from going in. The safety things would prevent the car from starting.

i don't understand how that can happen.

the car started absolutely fine last time i drove it. tehre was never any sign of resistance or unwillingness of the key to enter the ignition.

maybe something is stuck in there?

I hesitate to post this - but years ago I had a similar problem with the wife's car. Key was stuck half-way in and no amount of wiggling would help. Called a locksmith. He looked at it and grabbed a rubber mallet from his tool box. Gave the key a rap on the end and it went right in. Cost me $40 when that was real money.

well, i have roadside assistance and it's still covered under warranty so i don't plan on paying anything.

maybe i'll try the hammer trick when i get home...

Maybe some moister got in it. Spay some WD40 in it and try again. I would not force it! Especially if it's covered under some kind of warranty.

the weird part is that it moves a little. like maybe a MM or two each way. it's not totally stuck tight.

what would i lube? the key? inside the keyhole? it doesn't seem like the key is going in all the way, that's the problem.

it's in a little, and i get play both right and left.
